This hiking track takes you to the summit of Mt Edwards, the taller, conical-shaped peak beside Moogerah Dam. This trail crosses the dam wall then leads to the top the mountain with an elevation gain of almost 500m to really get your heart pumping. There is a lookout part-way up the track with views of Little Mt Edwards/Reynolds Creek below the dam wall, while the lookout at the summit faces north-east towards Brisbane and the Fassifern Valley.

Officially listed as Grade 5/Very Hard difficulty (unsigned trail, loose/rocky surface, some tree falls/overgrown sections + steep incline), this trail is suitable for walkers with a moderate-high fitness level who are confident and well prepared (wear appropriate shoes, take plenty of water etc.).

Getting there

Follow the Cunningham Highway towards Aratula. Follow the signs to Moogerah Dam by turning onto Charlwood Rd, then right onto Lake Moogerah Rd. Continue for 2.7km then turn right onto Moogerah Connection Rd toward Fred Haigh Park. Park near the dam wall. Note: The roads to Moogerah Dam are sealed and suitable for 2WD, but they are also winding, busy at peak holiday times and often have water damage/livestock crossing on the road - take care.

Route/Trail notes

Walk across the dam wall and up a flight of steps to find the beginning of the track. The track is unsigned but well-used so it is clear to follow without a map. The hike to the summit can be divided into three parts. The first part is gradual rise to a rocky slab with good views of Little Mt Edwards and the gorge between them containing Reynolds Creek - be careful near cliff edges. The second section is steep, with larger boulders forming natural steps and lots of loose rocks so care is needed. The final stretch to the summit is a gradual rise again for about 600m, where the path may be overgrown with lantana. Once at the top you can explore left and right for different lookouts offering many vantage points (towards Brisbane - no view of the dam).

Decent mountain, starts with a scenic walk around the dam then quickly gets into it. There is a rocky outlook about 1/3 of the way up with a nice view if you don't want to commit to the whole mountain. After that it has a fairly consistent gradient of climb, had to have a couple of breaks to catch our breath. And I can confirm you will want to bring water with you for this (by the time our group made it to the rocky lookout 2 people had finished their water, although one of those finished it before he got out of the car #rookiemove). Great view at the top, with heaps of room to have lunch if you so chose to. Takes close to 90 minutes to get up at a comfortable rate.

This is a good one!

Very good walk with a beautiful view at the end and we'll with it. Track is a little over grown in some areas due to trees falling but easy enough to go around.

First half to the lookout spot is easy enough. Second half to the summit is a challenge for more elderly walkers but worth while views at the top.
Agree with other walkers- take plenty of drinks.

Good quick hike, the track gets steeper on the second half of the journey. About halfway has nice views from a rocky cliff section, but continue up for the great summit views over the valley :)
Remember to take enough water - I passed a guy on my way down who had run out of water just past the half way mark. I used my remaining water to fill up his 600ml bottle...
The sign says 3km to summit but it's the elevation that gets you sweating!

Did this walk on a quiet day, had the track to ourselves. Whilst I would say I am relatively fit for my age, it was quite a challenge and I take my hat off to all those who say they have taken younger kids up there. Nice views from the top but it would have been nice for more views of the lake. Still enjoyed the challenge though

Lovely climb. Very special memories up there. Gets extremely windy at nightfall.

We did the walk today early in the morning, took us 49 min to the top and about the same time down hill. A nice and well track all the way except a bit rocky underfoot at mid section. Slight disappointment that we were unable to see the Lake from the summit. Overall enjoyed this short walk!

We did this walk today with my 4yr old and 11yr old, they both loved the walk and the youngest walked the whole way up and down by himself, will do this again.

Started at midday, not a good idea. Was very hot with little breeze and patchy shade.
Easy to follow track, fair amount of loose rocks, so good shoes are a must. It's a constant climb, so a moderate level of fitness is needed.
I recommend insect repellent; mosquito's, sandflies and god knows what else gave it a good go, even biting through my shirt once I'd lathered on some deet.
Shared the track with a monitor lizard for a while, which was amazing.
Took 1.5hrs up and 1hr down and if I'm honest, while it was a good walk, given how long it took, I'd rather do Mt Mitchell again.

Found the steeper bits quite a challenge, definitely one done best in the early morning. Great views at the top.

The start of this hike is at the picturesque Fred Haigh Park at Lake Moogerah 🏞
This park has bbq's, shaded picnic areas, toilets as well as a lovely little cafe.
To get to the start of this hike you need to walk over the dam wall🏞 Please take note that the dam wall access is only permited 6am - 6pm ⏰

It took me about 1.5hrs to reach the summit and I actually found it more challenging than Mt Cordeaux/Bare Rock. I am on the tail end of the flu and laryngitis though, so my health and fitness aren't much to go on at the moment 😕

The hike is only about 6km return but from the halfway point it is pretty much all up hill. From this halfway point you will see Little Mt Edwards straight across and straight up is the summit of Mt Edwards ⛰

When you reach the summit the view and the feeling of gratitude and love is a moment where no words are needed because you just relish being in the Now 🙏

There are plenty of places to find in the shade to just be and feel love 💖
This is a great hike that I would say a moderate level of fitness is needed. The track is very visible all the way up. I would definitely recommend doing this one early in the morning 🌄 and in our cooler months ❄ There is a lot of scrub 🌳🌾 that covers this mountain and I can only imagine how hot and steamy it would get in sumer time 🏜

It only took me about 45min to get back down.

👟⛰ 💕🙏

The view at the top is worth it. Not a difficult walk but it will get the heart pumping. About 2 hours total walking time. The lake beside the hill is stunning.

awesome walk...good workout..a couple of cliff edges but nothing too dangerous if you stick to the path ,sign marks the start of the cliffs. can be done with kids but under supervision at all times..a few trees across the path but nothing you cant climb over..watch out for your eyes as heaps of thorns and leaves at eye level...

Awesome views from the summit. Would recommend this hike for an early morning.

Nice 3 hr return walk on a busy trail.

Wig on 1 May, 2017

Nice early hike on good friday, perfect cool conditions for the steeper bits

The view was stunning from the summit. Pretty easy walk but it did get a little tougher from the middle up, rocky and can get slippery when raining. Entrance from Lake Moogerah Haigh Park's dam bridge, open 5.30am to 5.30pm (some days to 6.30pm). Will climb again. Took us 2 hours return with about 30minutes spent on the summit. Highly recommended.

Great hike. We did it in the late afternoon (would recommend early morning) and managed to complete it in a little under 3 hours. I did this hike with my 3 kids, aged 6,7 and 9 years old. Some parts were a bit challenging for little legs, with some steep sections climbing up loose rocks, a few fallen trees to go under and or over and some cliff edges to be mindful of about halfway up/down. At top the views were stunning! Although the kids were exhausted, they all loved it!

cmccall84 on 12 Apr, 2017

Great walk. I think this can be "hard" for some people. Definitely a bit above medium for me. No scrambling, just uphill quite steep in some sections. Nice views at the top but just a small area. Good training walk. 1.5 hour to go up and a bit less to go down.
