Killiekrankie Mountain Lookout

A short walk to stunning lookouts over the New England NP wilderness to the west, and across to the sea in the east. There is a stand of mountain mahogany (hug a tree) along the walk. Even if you aren't rock-obsessed, its hard not to notice the interesting trachyte volcanic dyke as you climb toward the summit. We had a lunch at the picnic site. The access road to this walk, Horseshoe Road, is 4WD and interesting in itself, passing through different types of forest including Leagues Scrub. There is a vision to make this part of a long distance walk (Great Koala National Park).

Kings Plains Creek Falls

A fun walk rock-hopping down the creek (no marked track) to the falls, best after rain. Lots of wildlife, and lovely orange gums. Although this walk is short, allow 2 hours to enjoy yourself and observe the birds and nature. Its a surprisingly pretty spot and uncrowded, in a park that protects rare woodland. If you need accommodation, check out nearby Kings Plains Castle for a change from a tent.

La Perouse Historical Walk

This walk, primarily across open lawns, offers views across Botany Bay while visiting historically significant landmarks. The side trip to the Bare Island Fortifications is well worth it, with tours available on Sunday afternoons. However, a walk across to the locked gate on Bare Island is still well worth the time - also, there are steps at the far side of the bridge down onto attractive unfenced rock platforms. Both the historic tombstone and monument by the museum are worth a visit, to contemplate our early explorers. Food, beach and a children's playground are available close to the end of this walk. A magnificent location with so much history.
