Of all that The Great Ocean Road has to offer, after two visits, the Bay of Islands continues to be my favourite spot for a picnic and to while away time enjoying the bay views and fishing boats.
The Twelve Apostles (Port Campbell National Park)
30 May, 2009
Very Easy
1.2km return
45 mins
I write this 15 years after my first visit to this iconic location. One of the stacks has been lost over that period leaving just seven.
Loch Ard Gorge (Port Campbell National Park)
30 May, 2009
Easy
1.7km return
45 mins
After 15 years since my last visit, this spectacular gorge, the Razorback and Mutton Bird Island do not disappoint.
Bald Rock Summit (Bald Rock National Park)
27 Dec, 2005
Medium
2.9km return
90 mins
I found this a really easy climb, but then ten years ago I was a lot younger and fitter! The scramble up the face is great fun, but was scorching hot. The density of the surrounding bushland makes you wonder how the first pioneers ever got through?
Minyon Falls Loop (Nightcap National Park)
7 Aug, 2004
Medium
6.8km return
3 hrs
We have visited these falls a number of times over the years and every time it has been in the dry season, with not much water coming over the falls. That said, it is always a pleasant walk down and around the falls for all the family.

Watch out for the kookaburras in the picnic area, they pinch your sandwiches!
Queen Mary Falls Circuit (Main Range National Park)
7 Aug, 2004
Easy
2km return
45 mins
Been to the falls a few times over the year, the last of which was showing visiting friends from England around the area. Judging by the photo, it must have been English weather as well!
Interestingly, nearby Daggs Falls was named after my housekeeper's great grandfather, who was the postmaster in Killarney.
Mt Warning Summit Trail (Wollumbin National Park)
5 Apr, 2004
Hard
8.3km return
5 hrs
Bridal Veil Falls (North Island NZ)
7 Nov, 2001
Easy
1.4km return
45 mins
Did many walks in New Zealand back then, but only a couple were ever recorded and photographed.
Daggs Falls Lookout (South East Queensland)
2 Oct, 2001
Very Easy
40m return
15 mins
Some years after I visited these falls, I employed a lady called Judy Dagg who told me the falls were named after her great grandfather who was, I think, the Postmaster in Killarney and there was something about the Post Office burning down.
Queen Mary Falls Circuit (Main Range National Park)
2 Oct, 2001
Easy
2km return
45 mins
A lunchtime pit stop for a couple of walk when travelling from Gatton to Byron Bay.
Mt Ngungun (Glass House Mountains National Park)
1 Oct, 2001
Medium
2.8km return
90 mins
It might be almost 20 years since I first climbed Ngungun, but my diary never lets me down and I quote: My exercise this morning is climbing another volcanic plug. Ngungun, in the Glasshouse Mountains. This is a two hour round trip, including a stop at the top which was covered in flying ants. Chatted to a couple of assailers up there or down as the case may be. Also met an old guy of 82 who has climbed the hill everyday for the last 7 years.
Mount Baga (Central Queensland)
24 Sep, 2001
Hard
1.8km return
90 mins
The first mountain I ever climbed in Australian on a visit in 2001.

The only details I can remember was that it was difficult then to keep on a track. The only clue I had was that the start was at the back of the old mine area. I got about half way up and the track just disappeared and as I was on my own and nobody else around, I came back down for safety reasons.

No digital photos back then so have had to scan mine in and the quality is not that great.
Ellinjaa Falls (Far North Queensland)
19 Sep, 2001
Easy
400m return
15 mins
I recently looked back through photos from an East Coast trip back in 2001 and came across five walks I had never recorded. I have to admit that I can’t remember anything about it but photos never lie.
Nandroya Falls (Wooroonooran National Park)
19 Sep, 2001
Medium
4.5km return
90 mins
Another photo found in my album taken in 2001 shows that I did this walk, but can’t remember the details, as I completed three ‘falls’ walks that day.
Millaa Millaa Falls (Far North Queensland)
19 Sep, 2001
Easy
400m return
30 mins
With adventurous bushwalking off the cards at the moment (Jan 2020), due to severe weather conditions, I had a look back through my record to see if there were a few I had never posted and this was one from 2001.
This is a most wonderful place, whilst Josephine Falls gets all the cred, this place beats it in every way; from its surrounding lush rainforest garden, waterhole for cooling off and a beautiful waterfall, which you can get under and behind, what more could you want.
Kulki Boardwalk (Daintree National Park)
17 Sep, 2001
Easy
600m return
15 mins
My first full day in Australia and I come across this wonderful place where the rainforest meets the ocean and I wonder why, with all this beach, is nobody in the water? Naively, at that time, I had no appreciation of what lurks in the water around here, till I saw the sign 'crocodiles abound here'!
