Fossil Cliffs Circuit (Maria Island National Park)
27 Nov, 2025
Easy
4.5km return
2.5 hrs
We walked this in the opposite direction to the description - inland but first then descended towards the airfield last. No idea if this is an easier route or not - it didn't seem too step but we then copped a massive headwind in the open area near the airfield Spectacular scenery.
Very windy. Some wattles in bloom
Saw a Tassie Devil at the start of the track in Darlington - that was a complete shock as we never thought we would see one in the wild
Painted Cliffs/Oast House Circuit (Maria Island National Park)
27 Nov, 2025
Easy
4.3km return
2 hrs
Walked straight here from the ferry
Tide wasn't quite right for the cliffs but still really enjoyed the coastal scenery. Views inland are nice too looking at the terrain and the trees.
Cataract Gorge (Tasmania)
26 Nov, 2025
Easy
1.6km one-way
45 mins
Terrific walk
Really enjoyed it
Love Cataract Gorge - our second visit here. First was 9 years ago almost to the day.
Can't think of another Australian city that has anything like this so close to the CBD
Fern Glade Loop (Tasmania)
24 Nov, 2025
Easy
1.8km return
30 mins
Nice easy forest trail
Visited around 5pm
Gates are open until sunset in the summer months
Saw a platypus down the far end of the second car park
And a Green Rosella having a drink from the waters edge
Edge of The World (West Coast Tasmania)
23 Nov, 2025
Easy
200m return
30 mins
Visited this spot 3 times in 24 hours.
Wasn't particularly windy at any stage while we were there
Great views of waves, clouds and coastline
Drive slowly as there are wombats that feed on the edges of the road in, we saw 3 when visiting at 7pm
Julius River Rainforest & Sinkhole Walk (West Coast Tasmania)
23 Nov, 2025
Easy
2.1km return
45 mins
We did the rainforest walk only. Not the sinkhole walk - purely because of only having a few hours in the area.
Beautiful trail along a boardwalk at first then a marked trail with a few sections of wooden steps.
Lovely flowing river lined by tree ferns. And picnic tables for a snack afterwards. Pack your own lunch and drinks as there is absolutely nothing to buy in the area.
Visited on a sunny Sunday in November and only saw 2 other cars .
Lake Chisholm (West Coast Tasmania)
23 Nov, 2025
Easy
1.1km return
30 mins
Beautiful trail with an up and back and a small loop.
30 minutes is about right
The lake (sinkhole) is beautiful and the interesting way the lake was formed is described on the signs. The vegetation and massive eucalypts are superb.
We saw a Sulphur Created Cockatoo, Grebe, Ducks and Fairy Wrens. Apparently also a platypus spot but I think you would have to be lucky given the size of the lake. You walk to one viewpoint of the lake - the trail doesn't follow the waters edge for very long.
Sumac Lookout (West Coast Tasmania)
23 Nov, 2025
Very Easy
100m return
10 mins
Roadside stop to stretch the legs for a few minutes.
The lookout provides a view of the Arthur River - we enjoyed the up high perspective having done the Arthur River Cruise the day before
Trowutta Arch Track (Tasmania)
23 Nov, 2025
Easy
1.1km return
30 mins
Easy up and back through nice rainforest.
The arch and sinkhole are impressive and the vegetation has a pre historic type feel
A nice finish to a day on the Tarkine, although most people probably do this one first
The Nut (Tasmania)
21 Nov, 2025
Easy
2.6km return
1 hr
Have been keen to do this one for many years after we couldn't fit Stanley in to our previous trip to Tassie.
Walked at 4.30pm on a Friday in daylight savings - bright, warm and surprisingly no wind. The first "zigzag" section is very steep but has a handrail to assist and we actually found it harder on the way down. The 2km circuit passes through a few different vegetation types and a number of lookouts. We saw an Echidna, a couple of pademelons and the views lived up to expectations.
Ross Historic Walk (East Coast Tasmania)
20 Nov, 2025
Easy
2.3km return
1 hr
Easy stroll.
Did this around 6pm in daylight savings hours and only saw a handful of other people.
We got a great sighting of a platypus right under the bridge near the carpark - didn't even know they were found in this area.
Cape Bruny Lighthouse (Bruny Island)
18 Nov, 2025
Medium
2km return
1 hr
Just walked from the carpark to the Lighthouse and did the lighthouse tour. Then spent some time afterwards wandering around the area looking at the views and small museum. Spectacular scenery and nice coastal heathland. The guide at the lighthouse mentioned that there are lots of Tiger Snakes in the area.
The Neck and Truganini Lookout (Bruny Island)
17 Nov, 2025
Easy
600m return
30 mins
10 minute walk up a steep wooden staircase. Hold on to your hat.
Spectacular view from the top of the neck area which is a truly unique landform. As good a lookout as anywhere in the country. Toilet facilities at the bottom.
Mt Wellington - Summit Lookouts (Wellington Park)
16 Nov, 2025
Very Easy
400m return
30 mins
Freezing cold, blowing a gale, small snow falling and raining sideways. Bit of a shock coming from 32 degrees in Qld the day before. Would have liked to explore some of the longer trails but the conditions were atrocious.
Would love to come back on a future visit to Hobart
Kondalilla Falls Circuit (Kondalilla National Park)
29 Oct, 2025
Medium
4.7km
2 hrs
Nice circuit midweek
First visit in about 15 years
Mount Beerburrum (Glass House Mountains National Park)
18 Oct, 2025
Medium
3.5km return
90 mins
Steep! About 10 minutes of the ascent is brutal and the rest of the walk is quite enjoyable if you can manage the steep part.
Wouldn't attempt when wet as I would worry about slipping on the way down.
If you aren't sure about your fitness try Ngungun first, it is easier.
Coffee shop across the road.
Lace Monitors can be seen near the carpark and this time I saw one near the summit
Mt Ngungun (Glass House Mountains National Park)
4 May, 2025
Medium
2.8km return
90 mins
Good walk with a nice view
Not too difficult - we took our niece (9) this time and there were lots of other kids on the trail.
Can get crowded
Carole Green Walkway (South East Queensland)
1 Mar, 2025
Very Easy
1.6km return
20 mins
Relatively easy trail. Paved all the way down to a circular timber boardwalk section. Always plenty of birdsong, although it is one of those places where they are easier seen than heard. Mozzies can be ridiculous at times and the path can get slippery after heavy rain. Have seen koalas here at least 3 times
Tinchi Tamba Wetlands (Brisbane City Council Local Walks)
27 Oct, 2024
Very Easy
3.8km return
1 hr
Easy flat walk through mangroves and adjacent eucalyptus woodland. Zero elevation to speak of. It can be unpleasant after sustained heavy rain fall as lots of water can sit around for weeks. Best walked early in the morning when the kangaroos are more active and the picnic area is quiet, or alternatively late afternoon to catch a sunset from the picnic area. I have seen lots of different bird species along the trail over the years, although not much from the designated bird hide.
Bullocky Rest to Forgan Cove Loop (South East Queensland)
6 Oct, 2024
Easy
8km return
110 mins
Have done this walk many times over the last 20 years.
Sometimes I do the whole walk, other times I just park at Bullockys and look for koalas in the first section/picnic area and/or watch the sunset. The Bullocky Rest picnic area is as good as any and is nice for a cool drink or a snack after your walk Normally takes 2.5 hours if I do the whole trail as I like to try and spot birds and koalas along the way and will stop accordingly. Surprisingly I have only even seen one snake here which was a python. Look out for Koalas, Tawny Frogmouths, Fairy Wrens and the occasional bird of prey. There is also a group of Pale headed Rosellas in the first section between Bullocky Rest and Forgan Park that have been there for many years.
