A moderate hike to the summit that offers excellent views of Lake Taupo, Mt Ruapehu and Mt Tongariro. The track is very well marked however it branches off quite frequently, don't panic all tracks lead to the summit so you won't get lost. The summit has great views but the best views are a bit further down the ridge line on a rocky outcrop.
The volcano where the one ring to rule them all was forged, or more accurately the volcano Mt Doom was modelled off for Lord of the Rings movies. Located just off the track on the Tongariro Crossing is a very intimidating climb to the summit of Mt Ngauruhoe. In recent years climbers have been encouraged not to climb it due to the dangers involved with climbing to the summit.
*On way up make sure to use the solid ground of the ridge line otherwise you will end up sliding down as much as you gain height with each step. This is very important to remember if you are going to try to summit Mt. Ngauruhoe.*
On the way down you will be able to 'scree ski' down which allows you to make it down the mountain very quickly around half an hour where as getting up would've taken around two hours.
A nice casual stroll up a well marked trail to the summit of Mt Maunganui where fantastic coastal views await you.
A steady walk with a lot of stairs to the lookout near the top of Mount Manaia. Very distinctive mountain with massive rock pillars on top of it. There is a rough track leading to the furthest pillar which you can climb up.
Spring Mountain from Thornbill Drive, Greenbank. Walk is a bit of a hard slog but the views from the different points on the trek are really spectacular.
The Six Foot Track has become one of the “classic” NSW overnight walks since it was opened for bushwalking in 1984. It follows the route of the original six foot wide bridle track between Katoomba and Jenolan caves built in 1884. A significant part of the track traverses farming land or uses 4WD roads (and all the official camp sites are accessible by 4WD) so don't expect a wilderness experience!
one way loop can be undertaken in either direction
Start where the Ferry drops you off just North of Tangalooma. Walk down to Tangalooma and along the beach till the turn off for the Desert (there's a hazard beacon on the hill). Continue through the desert to the far side then continue along the Rous Battery track (9.8kms). Next day after exploring bunkers head straight North along the beach on the East side of the island. Next is to head along middle road then turn north where mount tempest can be climbed then continue along telegraph track (16Kms) then through to Buwler. Then from the North West corner of the island back south along the western shoreline to the ferry.
