Over two thousand engravings, ochre stencils and freehand paintings adorn the 62m-long sandstone walls of this significant Aboriginal site. The Art Gallery contains one of the best examples of stencil art in Australia.

Getting there:

Drive into Carnarvon Gorge off the Carnarvon Highway via Carnarvon Access Road and follow to the end of the road, where there are the car parks and Information Centre.

Maps:

Carnarvon Gorge National Park

Route/Trail notes:

Head out from the information Centre on the Main Track, that starts with a creek rock crossing. After 5.1km and five further creek crossings, a side track to the left (340m) will take you up to the Art Gallery.

Return by the same route.

Permits/Costs:

None.

Other References/Comments:

A toilet stop is available just beyond the Moss Garden turn off.

Most people will take the opportunity to travel further into the gorge to visit Wards Canyon, the Amphitheatre and Moss Garden (14km) return, or if you have the time and energy down to Big Bend and Cathedral Cave (24km) return.

The Gorge is a long way out, so there are a number of places just outside of the National Park to camp: Takarakka Bush Camp, Wilderness Lodge and Sandstone Park and in the holiday season, Carnarvon Gorge Camping Area.

Comments

This was great if you had never seen 'Rock Art', but I found the inscriptions very repetitive and have seen better in the Northern Territories. Interesting that there is a lot of graffiti 'modern rock art' all around the 1950's.

We did this on the way back from Cathedral Cave. Amazing and worth the Side trip.

Another hot day in the gorge so an early start to walk up to the Art Gallery then do the side tracks to Ward’s Canyon, the Amphitheatre and Moss Garden on the way back.
Every one of those side tracks offers something special.
In hindsight it might have been better to do the side tracks on the western side early on a hot day before the sun gets too high.

Sensational!

This was a fantastic walk. I tried to walk to Big Bend but I had trouble finding the path so I didn't push through. The path is quite clear up until this part of the gorge so it's easy to follow and not difficult physically. It was very hot and sunny which was the exhausting part. Take plenty of water unless you have a filtration straw/system and then you could take straight from the river as needed. There are 5 river crossings and some loose rocks so good footwear is better.

The Art Gallery was gorgeous. The stencilings and engravings look so fresh even though they are thousands of years old! There are information boards so you understand the messages being conveyed. On the way back I stopped in all the other sections. It was well worth the 10hr drive to see this place.
