Griffiths Island

Griffiths Island with its colony of shearwater seabirds, winding pathways and the spectacular lighthouse at the eastern tip, it is a great place to explore.
The Island supports a number of native animals including a small mob of swamp wallabies. It is also the site of one of Australia’s most accessible breeding colonies of short tailed shearwaters or mutton-birds.

Battery Hill

This hill first served as the Harbour Master’s signal point for shipping. Local militia units established the gun batteries and built the concrete fortifications that were completed in 1887. The bluestone powder magazine was built in 1860 to store explosives used in the construction of the river wall.

Mt Cordeaux

Mt Cordeaux forms the Northern side of Cunningham's Gap. The track ends at a platform just below the main peak and is ideal for viewing South, down the length of Main Range National Park. There are also good views of the Moogerah Peaks, Mt Barney and North to the Mistake Mountains.

National Parks signage officially lists this walk as Grade 4 difficulty (most of the track is unsealed, with hazards such as tree roots/rocks, muddy sections and occasional tree-falls across the path). Walkers with a moderate level of fitness should find this a comfortable walk and be able to complete it in under the given timeframe.

Perhaps overshadowed by Port Campbell and the Twelve Apostles just down the road, the Bay of Islands offers an equally spectacular experience without the crowds.

Banksia Track

True to its name this track features a variety of banksia species. Visit in autumn when the banksias are in bloom. The track begins in Frog Hollow where wet heath provides rich habitat for 23 species of frog that call Karawatha Forest home then climbs through eucalypt forest to the crest of the hill and the sandstone boulders of Poet’s Rock. This track connects with the Dianella, Wallum and Dentata tracks for a longer walking experience.

This was my first overnight hike. It was challenging, but not ridiculous. A good beginners walk.
I highly recommend going for a dip in the creek even in Winter. It was like an ice bath for my tired muscles :)

Crossing Stony Creek, following the gorge and canyon upwards to exit via steel steps and ladders, then following arrows on rock through eucalypt forest and bare rock towards a narrow crevasse exiting via a ladder. Then on towards the cliffs and the Pinnacle.
