One of the lesser climbed peaks of the Stirling Range, Mt Magog features a long undulating walk to the base of the mountain then a steep walk/scramble to the top to get excellent views over the surrounding area and the neighboring Talyuberlup Peak.

Getting there

Driving along Stirling Range Drive lookout for signs to Mt Magog. There is a little driveway that leads to a small picnic area and carpark where you start the walk.

Route/Trail notes

The walk starts off fairly gently with a long trail leading to the base of the mountain. Once you start heading up don't expect any respite, it is uphill all the way to the summit. The first 2/3 until you reach the saddle is just a steep walk, however the remaining third has some mild scrambling involved in getting to the summit cairn. Excellent views at the top as is the case with all the peaks in the Stirling Ranges.

Permits/Costs

$15 per vehicle per day

Comments

My 4th and final mountain for the day. The walk in doesn't gain much elevation but once you start making your way up the mountain you gain elevation fast. There are a few nice views on the way but unlike other Stirling Mountains you have to wait til you get to the top before you get a really good photo opportunity. The track is easy enough to follow but it is probably the least travelled of the mountains I did while I was there (was the only one I did where I encountered no other hikers). The scrambling isn't too bad, no harder than Flinders Peak. Saw a friendly Tiger Snake on the way up.
