Mt Mitchell, one of two peaks on either side of Cunningham's Gap, is a good track walk which provides great views of Main Range, the Moogerah Peaks and through to Mt Barney. There is a wide variety of biome types along the track, including luxuriant rainforest, eucalyptus forest, and montane heath, as well as impressive natural rock formations, making this an incredibly scenic walk.

Getting there

From Brisbane follow the Cunningham Highway towards Cunningham's Gap. At the top of the gap turn right into 'crest' carpark adjoining the highway. The Mt Mitchell track leaves on the opposite side of the road, so take care when crossing! Note that the carpark is rather small, so try to get there early to maximise your chances of securing a spot.

The track is clearly marked so no map is required, however the Sunmap Cunninghams Gap sheet covers the area.

Fairly easy but longer and more winding than expected

Amazing walk, with great scenery and a surprisingly diverse array of habitat types, ranging from lush rainforest to dry, rocky bush. Quite an easy walk too, which was surprising given the elevation. I'll admit that the final part was a slight challenge for me due to my discomfort with heights, though the magnificent views made it completely worth the while.
Here's a short YouTube video featuring some of the wildlife I found on the hike:

Moderate incline the whole way up, so a good heart starter but still very enjoyable. Took about 2.5hrs including a short break at the top. Stunning views.

Been wanting to do this walk for a while and did it today in blistering winds (which is not recommended by the way). Last time I walked Mitchell was around 28 years ago, and still remember how it good it was and it didn't disappoint. The end of the track is not for the faint hearted but the views are unbeatable.

Some undergrowth coming in, can certainly see that fires have come through. Southern section looks seems untouched by the forest though. Nice walk, not too difficult

Relatively easy but long walk to the top. The middle section is quite overgrown so I would recommend wearing long pants. The top third of the walk is beautiful! Amazing views. Recommend.

Very nice and pleasant walk. Relatively easy, I saw even 4 years old doing it and old people too :) Awesome views on Cunningham Hwy

Amazing view in particular at Sunrise. Strongly recommend this track. Not a very hard track.

Took us approximately 2.5h return. Stunning views from the top!

Did this walk on a Monday morning on a sunny 25 degree day. Was cool in the morning, but a little warm up top without cloud cover. Also very overgrown track after the rain. Despite it being a Monday, we saw a lot of solo hikers and the views from up top are amazing. Recommend the walk on a slightly overcast day or in winter.

The first 1/4 of the way has frequent inclines which was a bit challenging but about half way it's manageable. 2hr up with breaks and 1.5hr down. Started about 7 and got to the top round 9 but the clouds blocked the view.

Fairly easy walk and very achievable by all fitness levels.. took about 1hr 17mins from road to top. Some areas on track vegetation was a little overgrown. Great view

A very scenic and short hike (around 2.5 hours return with a break at the top). Wear long pants as the track is overgrown at the moment with some spiky plants around shin height.

Nice walk, pretty easy path. South side of the mountain is quite pretty and has lots of birds. Took us 2 hours to get to the top and 1.5 to get back down.

Such a peaceful walk, passed only 1 person in the morning. 3.5 hr. round-trip, including many photo ops and a meditation session in the rainforest. A bit of rain and wind whipped me at the top, but the view was still spectacular! Highly recommended.

NatureFan77 on 13 Nov, 2020

Amazing view. Enjoyed the walk. The tracks are a bit over grown. Watch out to spicky needle plants they hurt so where long plants that covers your whole leg.

Caparker on 8 Nov, 2020

It was a really nice climb. Spectacular views. Vegetation was overgrown, which was nice to see. Must wear long pants next time. watch your hands as they can come in contact with prickly plants . Loved this walk and would definitely do it again.

T.M.O'D on 8 Nov, 2020

Great easy walk. Not too strenuous at all. 1 hr 26 min to the top and 1 hr 6 min down. Be careful to scan edges of paths as snakes were very active today. Nothing dangerous but best to just keep an eye open. Great views from the top.

Cheeky mid-week hike today. Done in 4 hours with LOTS of time for pictures testing out a new camera. Super easy with not that much incline at all. Interesting vegetation change from rainforest, to dry eucalyptus, rocky outcrops, rainforest again, and more rocky outcrops. Kinda sucks to see all the weeds that has crept in post-fire (inkweeds EVERYWHERE right now!). A little bit overgrown in some places with heaps of hairy, spiky plants so wear long pants :)

Started with bright blue skies that quickly turned overcast. Unfortunately it started raining at the top which doesn't make for great lookout photos but it at least made the greenery way more alive. The wildflowers were okay. Again, it was mostly weeds along this trail. A little disappointing with the crap weather and under maintained vegetation but at least we got some exercise in.

💐 Wildflower spots: Bulbine lilies, fringed lilies, native violets, native raspberries, golden everlasting daisies, native iris, false sarsaparilla, wonga vine, rock orchids hanging off cliff faces still blooming

Also saw like 5-ish pademelons which was cool :)

King orchids and rock orchids on north wall of east peak in full bloom.
