The Federation Track

Brisbane City council local walks

This track from the base of Mt Gravatt follows a track up the mountain, passing a lookout over the east. The path is quite rough in places with lots of loose rocks, though there are also steps and bridges. To reach the summit you need to turn left onto the Azania Way track at the end, and follow this for another .4km. You can then return back to where you started by following the summit track (1.2km)

Getting there

Start the walk at Gertrude Petty Place close to the start of Mt Gravatt Outlook Drive and on the left.

I do this, and other tracks on the same day, and circuit up to seven times, with harness, weights. Great track, done this for years. Last time was June 22nd

I did this with a mate who was wearing a weight vest. I absolutely love this track and is perfect for training purposes.

Parked at the summit and walked down the Federation track and back up the steeper Summit track. Backed this up with the campus track. Great walk for those with a reasonable fitness level.

Great way to get out of the house with the dogs. Steep in sections but pretty well maintained.

There is a cave complex you can access from this walk, photos and details here: https://juicedpixels.com/2016/06/27/mount-gravatt-caves/
This is a regular walk of mine for fitness. I extend it by going through the fire access tracks south of the water tower which come around near Griffith Uni and connect back up.

Decent walk, gets the heart pumping. started at Gertrude Petty Place and took the Federation track up the summit and then back via the Summit track for a nice round trip.

Lots of different ways to do this one. Best way for those wanting a decent 2K walk to the summit is to park at Gertrude Petty Place, which is the first car park on the left when heading up the mountain from Shire Rd - be advised there is limited parking, however if it is full turn back round the way you have come for road-side parking on the next corner down.

From the carpark follow signs to Federation Lookout, 700m further on. A steepish stoney path descends directly below the lookout for around 150 - 200m where there is an unmarked trail intersecting on the right. Take this and then follow signs to the summit - every other fork is signed. There are alternative ways down, however I recommend retracing steps to make a satisfying 4K walk.

Tracks are well defined but can be a little rough and steep in parts. Although signs are usually good, make certain to note each turn you take as there are multiple trails through this area.

We walked this track to go back down the mountain after taking the summit track to the top. This track is rougher, and didn't just go straight down, but up and down in sections.
