The track leads down to a viewing point near the top of Tawhai Falls, where you can watch the river tumble over the edge of an ancient lava flow.
There is then the option to continue down more steps to the river’s edge, where there is a view of the river and a more distant view of the falls. The river is fast-flowing and the rocks on the riverbank can be slippery.

From Whakapapa Village head back along State Highway 48 (Bruce Road) for 4km and the fall’s car park is on your right and well signposted.
From the car park head down the well formed pathway. About half way you reach the lookout at the top of the falls. Then continue along the path that takes you to the base of the falls.
Return by the same route.
None.
The river floods rapidly in wet weather. Stay away from the river when it is flooding (e.g. if it is high, fast, murky or loud).
Also known as Gollum’s Pool, it was the scene where Faramir and Frodo Baggins found and captured Gollum in Lord of the Rings Two.
Disappointing was the fact that the Information Centre did not have a paper version of the numerous walks available in and around the township and I had to take a photo of a wall map in the Centre to see where I could go. Plan ahead.
