Follow Whakapapanui Stream and enjoy the shelter of the forest.
Water-logged clearings are passed as the track follows Whakapapanui Stream. Here, storm damaged beech forest is slowly regenerating. Keep a look out along the river for the endangered whio/blue duck. They are the same colour as the rocks so can be very difficult to spot, but you may hear the male’s whistling call.

From Whakapapa Village head back along State Highway 48 (Bruce Road) for 3km and the Whakapapanui Track car park is on your left and well signposted.
Walks in and around Tongariro National Park
The track starts at the bridge and heads up stream to Whakapapa Village enjoying the shelter of the forest on wet and windy days.
10–15 minute walk before the end of the walk the Whakapapanui Walking Track branches to the left. Don’t follow the Whakapapaiti Track to the right in error.
If you left your vehicle at the start of the walk you have the option to return the way you came or walk the 3km back along the road.
None.
Disappointing was the fact that the Information Centre did not have a paper version of the numerous walks available in and around the township and I had to take a photo of a wall map in the Centre to see where I could go. Plan ahead by downloading the ‘walks’ link above.
