La Perouse Historical Walk

New South Wales

This walk, primarily across open lawns, offers views across Botany Bay while visiting historically significant landmarks. The side trip to the Bare Island Fortifications is well worth it, with tours available on Sunday afternoons. However, a walk across to the locked gate on Bare Island is still well worth the time - also, there are steps at the far side of the bridge down onto attractive unfenced rock platforms. Both the historic tombstone and monument by the museum are worth a visit, to contemplate our early explorers. Food, beach and a children's playground are available close to the end of this walk. A magnificent location with so much history.

Bairne Track to The Basin Circuit

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

Nice walk along ridge tops to secluded beaches, an enticing lagoon and detailed indigenous engravings. Can be done as a return walk to a really nice lookout near the end of the Bairne Track, or combined with the The Basin track to form a circuit (using a ferry to connect the two walks)

America Bay

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

A short walk with a great range of scenery, making it a great choice if you have only a short time in this National Park. This track one of two ways to access America Bay - the other is by boat. The track cuts straight through the bush from West Head Rd to pass historic Aboriginal engravings and a large cliff with a small waterfall, which also gives an impressive view of the bay. The well-formed track stops at a lookout over America Bay; there is a rough track down to the water.

This great little walk is a great heart pounder as you ascend to the lookout. There's plenty of steps. One thing to watch out for is the giant spiderwebs with accompanying giant spiders that stretch across the track. Great views from the top.

The Falls Walk

New South Wales

Mother Nature truly shines on The Falls walk, which starts halfway through the Rainforest loop at Minnamurra Rainforest Centre.

Amble along the elevated walkway and paved track, taking in the trickling streams, moss-covered rocks and feathered ferns beneath you. Soak up the breathtaking views over the rainforest canopy and canyon and take your time at the viewing platforms at the lower and upper Minnamurra Falls.

There are steep sections along the way, but it’s easy to find a seat and catch your breath in idyllic surroundings. You’ll likely see butterflies, animals and birds in the trees and leaf litter and, if you’re lucky, maybe even a lyrebird showing off his tail.

Carrington Falls Circuit

New South Wales

With its cascades, waterholes and rockpools, some regard Carrington Falls, where the Kangaroo River plunges over 50m to the gully below, as the most beautiful on the South Coast. Head to Carrington Falls picnic area, also known as Thomas Place, in the park’s north west to see for yourself and there’s a good chance you’ll agree.

Feeling energetic? From the picnic area you’ll find a variety of walking tracks that take you to a series of lookouts fronting the magnificent falls. Be sure to take the short walk along Izzards lookout track to enjoy another spectacular view. For longer walks head to the nearby Nellies Glen picnic area where you can choose from Warris Chair lookout track or Missingham lookout track for views over Carrington Falls Gorge.

After a more relaxed experience? Enjoy a picnic lunch as you listen to the distant crash of the falls or take a snooze in the shade.
