This track rises steadily up through exotic forest and then open tussock hill slopes to a viewing area with a 360° panorama of the surrounding mountains of the Southern Alps, various lakes and the Mackenzie Basin flats, before heading across the mountain below the Observatory and down the far side and back along the shoreline of Lake Tekapo.
The track passes the Church of the Good Shepherd and Dog Statue, along the shoreline, before heading along the edge of an exotic forest to open hillside tussock country and small tarns where wetland birds stop to feed, before heading back down to the Tekapo River through a plantation.

Based in Tully Gorge National Park. This is a steep hike to the top. Watch out for bladed or needled plants. Great view of Tully and the surrounding sugarcane fields. You can see the ocean from the top.

This walk gently winds its way through sub-alpine grasslands and scrub to the Mueller Glacier moraine wall. The track passes through a landscape that was formed in 1913 when a stream cut through from the glacier to the original Hermitage site, damaging the building. The walk ends at a viewing deck that gives stunning views of Mount Sefton, The Footstool, Hooker Valley, Mueller Glacier Lake and Aoraki/Mount Cook.
Icebergs can usually be seen floating in the lake in summer and in winter, the lake freezes over. The track leads through the old terminal moraines of the glacier to the lakeside boat ramp and you can see good examples of plant succession along the route. Tasman Lake is a relatively recent addition to the scene, starting its formation in 1974 and growing steadily since then. The large terminal moraines mark the foot of the Tasman Glacier at the time of the lake’s formation and are a sobering reminder of the glacier’s retreat.
There are several easy short dog-friendly walks in the area (about 2kms in total). There is a lovely shaded picnic area and a swimming hole with rope swing. It is not so much a picturesque walk but a good place to take the family for a relaxing picnic and to take your dog for a stroll and swim. Gates close at sunset.
No need to complete the full 14 kilometre Warrie circuit, but instead walk 3 kilometres (of the 17 km track) and see at least 3 waterfalls. You are walking along the side of the cliff with sheer drops below and rock faces above.
Very picturesque and one of the nicest walks in Springbrook National Park. Not to be confused with the view of the Goomoolahra Falls from above.
