Getting there

Google Maps - Wyaralong Dam Recreational Facility, which is of Wyaralong Dam Access Rd just off Beaudesert-Boonah Rd

Route/Trail notes

Starting at the carpark work your way down to the track that runs along the banks of the dam. From there you follow a very well marked/touristy track for quite a while. There are 2 tracks that lead to the summit, both are well marked but less touristy than the Dam perimeter track. From there it is a short but steep trek to the summit which has a great uninterupted view to the south. There are maps along the way to help you orientate yourself.

Free, but check the SEQ website before you go, it is prone to being closed for upgrades.

We did a very enjoyable shorter circuit to Summit Mount Joyce. Up the Service road, along and up the Ridgeline track to the summit and back down the Grass Tree and Shoreline tracks. Easy to navigate and spectacular views across to Mount Barney and Mount Lindesay. The Service road slowly climbs the ridge and is crossed by several mountain bike tracks. Walk to the very end of the Service road and there is an unmarked trail (not a mountain bike track) on the left which contours around to the path that takes you to the summit. About 12km - About 4 hours including lunch stop

Followed the service track most of the way then followed the ridgeline trail up to the summit. The start of the trail to the summit is not clearly marked. Quite steep most of the way. My hike to the summit and back was about 10kms. Was hesitant to walk the shoreline trail as it seemed overgrown at the start. Would recommend wearing gaiters for this section. Great views at the top. Leave yourself enough time to explore a little.

From Ipswich if you head out towards Beaudesert you will come across Wyaralong Dam.

They have a few shared hiking track's that you can choose from.

From the carpark I took the shoreline track along the dam and then quite a steep climb up to Mt Joyce.

The track has a lot of sand and loose stones and gets very slippery in parts.

It is a very hot hike with our steamy Aussie scrub. Please take plenty of water and I would not recommend doing this one in our hotter month's.

It's quite pretty along the dam with nice views from the summit of Mt Joyce.

It's not an easy hike but I wouldn't classify it as hard.
The track's are easy to follow but I would say a moderate level of fitness is needed. It does get the heart pumping 💓

Decided to bring our push bikes to save time getting to the base of the mountain. I would say we saved time but it certainly didn't save effort. The track has a lot of sand on it which led to some pretty sketchy moments riding downhill. The walk from the base to the top was really nice, wasn't overly difficult but enough to get your heart pumping. Was a bit of a miserable day but the view is still fantastic! Make sure to check on the SEQ water website before you go, first time we tried it was closed and the track was fenced off.
