This hiking track takes you to the summit of Mt Edwards, the taller, conical-shaped peak beside Moogerah Dam. This trail crosses the dam wall then leads to the top the mountain with an elevation gain of almost 500m to really get your heart pumping. There is a lookout part-way up the track with views of Little Mt Edwards/Reynolds Creek below the dam wall, while the lookout at the summit faces north-east towards Brisbane and the Fassifern Valley.

Officially listed as Grade 5/Very Hard difficulty (unsigned trail, loose/rocky surface, some tree falls/overgrown sections + steep incline), this trail is suitable for walkers with a moderate-high fitness level who are confident and well prepared (wear appropriate shoes, take plenty of water etc.).

Getting there

Follow the Cunningham Highway towards Aratula. Follow the signs to Moogerah Dam by turning onto Charlwood Rd, then right onto Lake Moogerah Rd. Continue for 2.7km then turn right onto Moogerah Connection Rd toward Fred Haigh Park. Park near the dam wall. Note: The roads to Moogerah Dam are sealed and suitable for 2WD, but they are also winding, busy at peak holiday times and often have water damage/livestock crossing on the road - take care.

Route/Trail notes

Walk across the dam wall and up a flight of steps to find the beginning of the track. The track is unsigned but well-used so it is clear to follow without a map. The hike to the summit can be divided into three parts. The first part is gradual rise to a rocky slab with good views of Little Mt Edwards and the gorge between them containing Reynolds Creek - be careful near cliff edges. The second section is steep, with larger boulders forming natural steps and lots of loose rocks so care is needed. The final stretch to the summit is a gradual rise again for about 600m, where the path may be overgrown with lantana. Once at the top you can explore left and right for different lookouts offering many vantage points (towards Brisbane - no view of the dam).

Took me two hours (unfit) to reach the peak, loads of breaks taken. From 2nd part onwards pretty much on an incline just gradually less steep. Clearing which looks down at the gorge is probably about 1/3 way. Definitely bring water. But the views were worth it!

A little trickier than I was expecting (I'm not overly fit at the moment) but definitely a satisfying challenge. I did it on my own and found the track easy to follow. It took me an hour and 15 up and just under an hour down.
Beautiful view from the top :)

I thought this was harder than medium, but I am not an experienced bushwalker. I took about 2 hours to get up :(

Scenic Rim really earning its name today. Good family walk but still need to watch your footing with kids. Nicer walk than I expected from the comments.

The hero moment was a young koala about 300m from the top and a swim on return.
The walk itself is exposed to mid morning /afternoon sun. Recommend an early morning start to beat the heat.

Went in summer and went through more water very quickly. Lots of elevation over a short period. Definitely hard but not big kms so doesn’t take ages

I’d rate this walk as hard! The inclines pretty steep and the track is fairly rocky, although easy to follow.

Pretty rough track held together with tree roots and rocks, pretty steep too. But the view is fantastic.

This was a very hard walk, relentless and steep. I consider myself fit but this had me puffing and stripping off (I was hurrying to make the top and back before close). Lovely view halfway up and again from the top, I would have liked to have stayed longer at sunset but had to make it down because they close the gates for some reason. :(

The dam on the way in is so daammm fine! After crossing it the walk starts. It took us 1 hr each way and there was no scrambling. There isn't much flat bits it's like walking up a very long hill. Not as steep as Mt Beerburrum though. The view at the top is impressive and would be great for sunrise and sunset except the dam gate closes at times that would prevent this I imagine. I won't do this one again but this side of the dam is a nice spot for a picnic.

continuous climbing until the summit. Unfortunately there was no falls now due to the dry season...but its a good exercise. We spotted a lizard and a spiny leaf insect.

Great walk, the view is magnificent!! Bit of a challenging hike, which we loved

Simon Heather on 30 Aug, 2020

Beautiful scenery and despite the haze enjoyed the beautiful view. Lots of loose rocks and a very eroded goat track with uneven steps. A steady climb.

Caroline on 21 Aug, 2020

Nice hike with great views along the way. We took about an hour to reach the summit.

Challenging, gets the heart pumping! Limited views at top. Mixture of dirt, rocks, boulders, trees. 3 hours in total including rest at top. 1.5 hours up, 1 hour down.

A challenging walk, especially for my wife who has short legs and found it a bit hard to climb some of the steps. But a fabulous view from the top - a great spot for a picnic lunch. Lots of turtles at the base of the dam wall. Near enough to 3 hrs walking time, with a half hour for lunch at the top.

Kaylene&Mal on 29 Jul, 2020

Nice hike! Bit intense with some steep inclines. Took me 1hr to to get to the top and that was a slow-ish steady pace with some short breaks in between. Beautiful views around a 1/4 of the walk when you climb over a rocky area, as well as at the top. I did it in my runners, but proper hiking shoes would be much better.

Foggy day buy was a airy peacefulness 🥰

Jemma on 12 Jul, 2020

Easy walk with kids.

Leanne Loch on Jul, 2020

Fantastic views from the summit.
Track has many large/high steps and is covered in loose scree/cobbles.
3.5 hour return trip for our group today with many stops to catch our breath and/or admire the views.
Very enjoyable.
