At 632 m Mt Edwards is the conical-shaped peak rising beside the Cunningham Highway close to Aratula. The national park was gazetted in 1966. It encompasses Mt Edwards, Little Mt Edwards, part of Reynolds Creek as well as a very nice gorge with pine trees on one side. After crossing the dam wall, sign says 3 km to the summit, but it is the elevation gain that gets the heart pumping. You start at about 150 m elevation and summit is 634 m, so almost 500 m rise. The hike up can be divided into three parts. First part is gradual rise to a rocky slab with good views of Little Mt Edwards and the gorge between them containing Reynolds Creek. Second section is steep with loose rocks so care is needed. Final part to the summit is gradual rise again for about 600 m. A bit of exploration can be done to the right and left when you reach the top.

Route/Trail notes

walk across the dam wall and then you come to the beginning of the track. It is well marked and rocky all the way up. From the Gorge Lookout there great views of Little Mt Edwards. Be careful at cliff edges. Once at the top there is a survey marker. As well as different lookouts offering many vantage points.

Pretty rough track held together with tree roots and rocks, pretty steep too. But the view is fantastic.

This was a very hard walk, relentless and steep. I consider myself fit but this had me puffing and stripping off (I was hurrying to make the top and back before close). Lovely view halfway up and again from the top, I would have liked to have stayed longer at sunset but had to make it down because they close the gates for some reason. :(

The dam on the way in is so daammm fine! After crossing it the walk starts. It took us 1 hr each way and there was no scrambling. There isn't much flat bits it's like walking up a very long hill. Not as steep as Mt Beerburrum though. The view at the top is impressive and would be great for sunrise and sunset except the dam gate closes at times that would prevent this I imagine. I won't do this one again but this side of the dam is a nice spot for a picnic.

continuous climbing until the summit. Unfortunately there was no falls now due to the dry season...but its a good exercise. We spotted a lizard and a spiny leaf insect.

Great walk, the view is magnificent!! Bit of a challenging hike, which we loved

Simon Heather on 30 Aug, 2020

Beautiful scenery and despite the haze enjoyed the beautiful view. Lots of loose rocks and a very eroded goat track with uneven steps. A steady climb.

Caroline on 21 Aug, 2020

Nice hike with great views along the way. We took about an hour to reach the summit.

A challenging walk, especially for my wife who has short legs and found it a bit hard to climb some of the steps. But a fabulous view from the top - a great spot for a picnic lunch. Lots of turtles at the base of the dam wall. Near enough to 3 hrs walking time, with a half hour for lunch at the top.

Nice hike! Bit intense with some steep inclines. Took me 1hr to to get to the top and that was a slow-ish steady pace with some short breaks in between. Beautiful views around a 1/4 of the walk when you climb over a rocky area, as well as at the top. I did it in my runners, but proper hiking shoes would be much better.

Foggy day buy was a airy peacefulness 🥰

Easy walk with kids.

Fantastic views from the summit.
Track has many large/high steps and is covered in loose scree/cobbles.
3.5 hour return trip for our group today with many stops to catch our breath and/or admire the views.
Very enjoyable.

A constant slog up hill with very little scenery to enjoy during pauses. Summit views not particularly rewarding due to the amount of trees. But good for exercise.

Not too sure if I’m really unfit or if this walk should be classified as hard... Well worth the jelly legs at the summit with beautiful 180 degree views. The view from the dam wall was impressive.

Kayla on 8 Jun, 2020

Quite a nice walk bit steep in a couple of places. Probably not the best walk on a really hot day. Only a 180 degree views at the top.

Need to go to Moogerah Peaks National Park in Google Maps to find Haigh Park and the carpark next to the dam. Pleasant hike. Food at the Dam Cafe was delicious.

We left at 7:40am - it was pretty warm by 9:00am when we reached the top - we would leave earlier next time. We needed a few breathers in the second half - it’s a steep trek. But worth it for the gorgeous views.

I can see what people mean by gruelling. Ugh. We started at 5:15pm and summited at about 6:20. Beautiful breeze at the top but be prepared for the second kilometre to kick your butt. My fitness is admittedly a bit low as I'm coming off a leg injury, possibly not the best return-to-hiking hike. The view across the dam wall at the end was gorgeous after sunset though. We had a bit of a moment worrying we'd be shut in as the sign says "public access to dam wall 5:30am - 6:30pm" but we exited around 7 and the gate was open. Probably a better winter hike than summer hike!

New Years Eve hike with the family- they're right about the heart pumping! Great hike but tough on the little ones... the views are stunning
