Table Top Loop

Toowoomba

Table Top mountain on the edge of Toowoomba, provides views of the Lockyer Valley and surround. The climb itself can be quite demanding with a lot of large steps over the Camel's Hump and a scramble just before the summit. But the reward at the top, with a circuit all the way around, provides a spectacular vista.

Table Top is an area of high significance to the Traditional Owners, recognised in the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Register and protected under the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003. You are respectfully requested to consider your decision to climb this mountain.

Getting there:

From Toowoomba follow South Street south until it becomes Tabletop Driver. Continue to follow Tabletop Driver until it turns into a dirt track. At the end of which is the entrance to the walk and areas to park.

Route/Trail notes:

The walk starts at the base of the Camel's Hump, which is comprised of a lot of large steps. This section is quite steep for about 150m. The down section of the hump is less demanding but expect to encounter medium sized rocks to climb over. The face of Table Top is predominently large gravel which can be loose so take care. Right before the summit expect a steep scramble, it's not a difficult climb, but pick your path before you start, to save having to change direction halfway. At the summit, there is a circuit that takes you all the way around the mountain top.

Permits/Costs:

None.

Really enjoyed the scramble at the top. Views were amazing with a lovely breeze. The terrain and steepness all the way up could be challenging for some but there are plenty of shaded spots here and there where you could rest or take a break. Take plenty of water and good shoes :).

Wow, what a buzz it was completing this. Might not be difficult for some (ie. the super kind man that gave me a hand at the trickiest part) but it was a real challenge for me to conquer my fear. Made it, enjoyed it, and am very pleased I can tick this one.

I did the Tabletop mountain hike yesterday morning and it was amazing to do again after over two years.

Did this walk yesterday and we didn't get to do it until the afternoon and I definitely wouldn't recommend going in the afternoon. The track is mostly exposed rock with very little shade that faces true west. It was very, very hot out (bring lots of water). Going in the morning would be lovely! Tabletop is cardio workout but not hard to do, we passed some kids as well as two border collies who were having the time of their life. My friend also completed it in sandals which I wouldn't recommend but it is doable!

Was not expecting this to be a scramble, you'll need a moderate amount of fitness to get to the top. The 360 views from the top are worth it. I saw a few people doing this in thongs, not recommended.

A great walk, can be steep in places a good work out, better to walk in the morning as its cooler, great 360 degree views on top, traversing the rocks along the track can be challenging so watch your steps as twisted ankles do occur, return trip can be done easily within 1.5 hrs.

A nice walk with great views from the top. Can get quite cold on the top with a strong wind blowing this time of year. A wind stopper type of jacket recommended for the cold windy days.

A very picturesque walk but you definitely need a fair level of fitness. There isnt much flat until you get to the top, it's either going up or down with some fairly steep sections where care needs to be taken. It is definitely worth it if you can handle it, we'll go again.

Was a great walk, but you will need to have a good level of fitness to complete it. The terain on the steep parts is challenging as many loose pieces of rock to traverse. However, great views all the way up and back and the best view from the very top. Make sure you take water.

Done this many times, its easy and great for getting fitness levels up to prepare for the next step

So... I have done alot of walks over the past few years and granted I have a few health conditions, but lets be real alot of this requires climbing and it has snakes to boot. Beautiful views but a hard enough walk.

Another beautiful walk to Tabletop with the children. Spectacular views from the top and a lovely spot to have lunch. Scrambling up the rocks at the top a lot of fun but may be challenging for very young children. Parking a bit tight as there were so many so many walkers on the day!

Loved this walk/climb, and have done it a few times now.

Short, but challenging with the need to climb up and over rocks.

It is a very popular track on weekends. It's great to see kids jumping over rocks, without fear.
It is very easy to roll an ankle or slip - don't think I've been a climb when someone hasn't slipped (no injuries though!)

Looking forward to climbing it again soon!

Great views, took half an hour up, a little longer down due to loose rocks. Great for fitness.

Table top was hell! The terrain was terrible and I had to come all the wsy down on my bum. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with any joint problems at all. However if you dont have any problems its an interesting climb.

Wow, the butterfly's were amazing this morning, Happy New Year all...

This was completed as my first mountain climb in 2014. At the time I struggled a bit to climb due to my level of fitness. If you want a challenge but you want to be able to walk away after it, this is a good start. Rocks were loose so use caution. I would do this again in a heart beat... The view from the top is amazing!

Fantastic walk - kids (aged 6, 7, 9 and 12) loved climbing over all the rocks!

Catherine on 11 May, 2014

Didn't make it to the top, but I was trying to climb with a 2 year old. I'm going to try it again soon, without my daughter
