Mt. Nishi 西の西山 (Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park, Yamaguchi Prefecture)

Japan

A pretty decent look at some karst topography, not as cool as Mt. Nuki in Kitakyushu but does the job. Akiyoshidai is much more expansive and this hike can be combined with many others to make for a full day.

Route/Trail notes

Begin this hike by first taking the obvious path near the observatory (close to the toilets) and walking the well maintained track out towards the karst. The first part of the trail is entirely paved with concrete and should present no problem. Part way through the hike you will be presented with a few different signs, take the more well maintained track towards 西の西山 (Mt. Nishi).

The climb up the mountain peak isn't too difficult and shouldn't require too much effort. At the peak enjoy sweeping views of the Akiyoshidai area and either prepare yourself to continue hiking across the plains or feel free to head back towards the carpark.

Permits/Costs

Nada. Just note that the onsite cafe does not serve food.

Comments

It was really hot. We planned to hike more of the park but ended up getting heat stroke so cut it short with just Nishi no Nishiyama.
