Akiyoshi Cave 秋芳洞 (Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park, Yamaguchi Prefecture)

Japan

Akiyoshi Cave is the largest limestone cave in all of Japan and it is really cool. I've been to a lot of limestone caves in Japan and this is by far the most impressive. Even if you don't do any proper mountain hiking in the park, I really recommend this one.

Getting there

Get to this hike by either taking a bus towards the cave or parking in the vicinity. Be careful as all carparks are paid parking.

Route/Trail notes

From the ticket counter, follow the obvious path through the cave. It is impossible to get lost. When you reach the end you have the option of exiting on the other side and then walking around the mountain back to the carpark or backtracking through the cave. I recommend backtracking as it is much nicer (and cooler).

Permits/Costs

Tickets for the cave are 1300 yen for an adult.
