Fujimidai 富士見台 (Gifu/Nagano Prefectures)

Japan

Fujimidai is part of the Chuo alps quasi national park in Gifu/Nagano prefectures. It literally translates as Mt. Fuji viewing area. On a clear day, you can see Mt. Fuji way out in the distance. From the top of Fujimidai, it was 360 MLG no-scope views of the central and southern alps. It's pretty spectacular and worth the hike.

Getting there

The hike begins at Misaka Shrine in Achi Village. 神坂神社. The road up is windy. There is a carpark at the peak for quite a few cars. Walk up into the shrine where you will see signs in both English and Japanese pointing you towards the hike.

Route/Trail notes

There are two routes that you can take, the Buna course and the Karamatsu course. It doesn't really matter which one you follow. For ascending, the Karamatsu course is slightly easier and shorter. Lookout for signs that say Karamatsu. It should take you on a narrow path winding through the trees.

The first section of the hike is a gentle incline through some monoculture pine trees. Not very interesting. As you ascend, the mountain becomes more biodiverse. Note that there is only really one way up the mountain. You know you will be near the top when the tree line has receded and thinned. There should be a lot of Sasa bamboo grass. Here you will get your first good views of the alps.

Continue climbing up past a mountain hut. Here is a toilet.

Walk past the mountain hut and there will be a sign pointing you towards Fujimidai. Here the path turns into concrete and proper steps. Continue up this trail following signs for Fujimidai. There will be a fork in the road. Take the right fork, heading away from Mt. Ena. It is an easy incline all the way to the summit which is marked by a sign.

Follow same path down.
