Good map recommended as there are a lot of named and unnamed trails. The trail notes for the "Thornbill Drv trailhead" are more useful and the walk follows mostly the same route.

Very enjoyable walk with lots of birds, cicadas and butterflies everywhere. Also left very early in the morning to avoid the heat, and had heavy cloud cover that kept the temps down. We must have taken a different route to the one described here as my GPS clocked the walk at 14.3 K's and it took us 3 and half hours.

The kids (6&8) did great on this on this one, even with some tricky bits. GPS was definitely handy, and the views great.

Nice gradual walk through a labyrinth of fire roads and trails, definitely pays to have a GPS just to make sure you are on the right track. Despite the relatively low elevation there are great views along the way and Spring Mountain itself has a nice 360 degree view including views of the city and Mt Cootha. There is a small aerial on the summit which serves to confirm you have indeed summitted the correct peak.
