Fernvale to Lowood - Part of BVRT

Brisbane Valley Rail Trail

For the most part this section of the walk follows beside the Brisbane Valley Highway ie it gets noisy and there really isn't much in the way of shade at all. However, the views are nice looking out towards to the mountains and onto Lowood. Heading in to Lowood you'll meet up with a bend in the Brisbane river with some lovely views downstream, and a large colony of bats making home in the trees. Arriving into Lowood, you'll be rewarded with the first section of actual railway for the trail; Lowood was the original terminus for the BVRT. Lowood has a pub, bakery and nice cafes for refreshments.

Getting there

Two cars are needed for this walk (unless you return on the same track, in which case make sure to double the distance and time!), one at Fernvale, one at Lowood.

Route/Trail notes

Fernvale to Vernor station is parallel to the Brisbane Valley Highway, very flat, lined with trees, but not much shade. You'll also get your first 'rail crossing'. Then Vernor into Lowood gets a bit more interesting, a few undulations, good birdwatching, views over the Brisbane River.

If you are short of time, it is worth walking the first kilometre or so from Lowood, to the back of the gold course, just to see the plantings which have been/are being established. They are native plants of many varieties, including some grevilleas which we have never seen before. AS real credit to those responsible. And when you return to Lowood have a pie at the bakery. The bakery has a huge assortment of fine pastries, cakes etc.

Nice flat walk today up and back between Fernvale and Lowood. Quite a hot day with no shade so I definitely do not recommend this in summer. Good views of the river in one section.

The first part of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, started at 7am, an easy walk with a few walkers along the way. It took me 1hr 30minutes to Lowood and then 1hr 50minutes return. Not much shade so not a Summer walk.
