Tane Mahuta Walkway

North Island NZ

This short walk leads you under cooling shade of the forest canopy to the majestic Tāne Mahuta, New Zealand's largest living kauri tree. Tāne Mahuta, also called "God of the Forest", is a giant kauri tree in the Waipoua Forest. Its age is unknown but is estimated to be between 1,250 and 2,500 years. It is named after Tāne, the Māori god of forests and birds.

Getting there:

The Tāne Mahuta Walk is signposted from SH12, which runs through the Waipoua Forest. The southern township of Dargaville is 65 km away and the northern township of Omapere is 18 km.

The road widens at the Tāne Mahuta car park to accommodate visitor vehicles. There is a picnic area, and toilets located 25m back from the car park on the opposite side of the road from the track entrance.

After cleaning your footwear at the entrance, the walkway takes you the short distance to the viewing platform. If you are lucky there will be a ranger on sight to relate the history of the tree and the environment you are in.

Return by the same route.

None.

Other References/Comments:

Just 1km further south on SH12 is another opportunity to walk into the Kauri Forest although (November 2025) a couple of the walks there were closed.

Comments

This was a very short walk after a very long drive! I really could not get excited about the lack of access to the Kauri Forest compared to those I have visited in Western Australia.
