Kegon Falls 華厳の滝 (Nikko National Park, Tochigi Prefecture)

Japan

Kegon no Taki is a 100m drop waterfall that is nothing short of stunning. It is a short walk from the bus terminal, it is a must visit for anyone checking out the Toshogu Shrine that's part of the Nikko World Hertigate Site.

Getting there

Begin this hike by either driving or taking the bus. If driving park somewhere near Lake Chuzenji or on the main street. If catching public transport, take a bus bound for Chuzenji Onsen from the bus stop out the front of Tobu-Nikko station, not to be confused with Nikko statiion which is JR operated.

Route/Trail notes

Walk along the road from the bus stop looking for signs that say Kegon Falls / 華厳の滝. This will take you to a lookout where you can see the waterfall. You cannot hike to the base of the waterfall. Just the lookout. From the lookout you can head home or go on to do something else. I personally recommend having a walk around Lake Chuzenji or planning a hike up Mount Nantai.

Permits/Costs

Bus costs an unholy amount of money from Tobu-Nikko, ~1000 yen or something.
