Getting there

Can commence the walk from either Charlottes Pass or Thredbo.

Route/Trail notes

After passing Rawsons Pass continue on the Main Range Walking Track. Descending from Kosciuszko you will see another large mountain to the left of the track with a bunch of boulders at the top. Continue down the stairs until you reach the saddle and look out to your left, there is a big rock with a pile of small rocks stacked on it. This is the marker for the Townsend track. The track won't be clearly obvious for about 20 meters but once you intercept it you can easily follow it all the way to the top. It isn't as well travelled as the Main Range Track, more just a small dirt footpad, but large enough that you shouldn't lose it. As you get closer to the top there is some scrambling and boulder hopping but nothing overly exposed or technical. From the top you have a fantastic 360 degree view.

Permits/Costs

$27 per day in Winter and $17 per day in Summer.

Comments

So glad we decided to do this in addition to Kozy. The track that led to the summit from the Main Range Trail was surprisingly quite well marked, even during the rock hopping segments. Only tricky part was identifying the start of it because there is no sign besides the pile of rocks. The boulder hopping part at the top reminded me a bit of Cradle Mountain - although Townsend had a lot less of it than Cradle Mountain did. I preferred the climb to Townsend over Kozy, more private, better view, and more fun! Long day getting out there and back from Charlottes Pass. We were hoping to do the entire circuit but unfortunately parts of it were closed so we had to do an out and back.
