Mcgrory Falls via Pine Gorge

Queensland

This is a relatively tough but short hike, leading to one of the biggest yet lesser known waterfalls. The first 3/5ths of the track is well maintained though from Pine Gorge Lookout there is a steep descent into Pine Gorge. It would be a good idea to bring some flagging tape to mark the exit point in the gorge.

Getting there

Drive to Dandabah in the Bunya Mountains and drive to and park in the Picnic Area (across from the walking track information shelter and TRACK ENTRANCE sign.)

Maps

The Qtopo website is very helpful and often enough to complete the walk, but there are a few topographical maps of the area that are also worth looking at. Visit the national park website for a printable walking track map.

Route/Trail notes

Start along the walking track for about 50 metres to an intersection. Veer right on the track toward Festoon Falls, follow this track through the forest, cross the bridge, then you'll come to a second intersection, the 80 metre detour to Festoon Falls is well worth it. Take the Scenic Circuit to Pine Gorge Lookout. The view from the lookout is spectacular with views to the Conondale Range, Tarong Power Station and Meandu Mine, vast farmlands and Pine Gorge. From this point a map printed off the Qtopo website is handy. Leave the main track and head straight for a gully about 100 metres to the north-east. Once you see the gully, follow it down into the gorge. At the end of the gully you will come to Saddle Tree Creek, turn right and follow the creek to the falls. Return via the same route.

Permits/Costs

You only need permits to camp overnight in the National Park campgrounds at Dandabah, Westcott and Burtons Well.
