This picturesque freshwater lake has a walking track all the way around, together with Tea House and the opportunity of a Cruise on the waters. This is a water filled crater that was created some 10,000 years ago as a result of a volcanic eruption.

Getting there:

Access is directly off the Gillies Highway about 8km east of Yungaburra and well signposted. Due to the nature of the Gillies Highway (includes 20km of very twisty uphill driving), this would be over an hours' drive from Cairns (50km).

Lake Barrine

Route/Trail notes:

This is an easy walk along the gravel pathways and boardwalk around the lake.  Keep a lookout for the olive green Freshwater Eels that cross land to get here. Plenty of bird and wildlife including the Tailless Skink and the Brown Bush Rat. There are also 'lovers' and 'twin' trees!

Another very nice walk. An easy 5km around the lake and some Tea Rooms if you desire some refreshment when you finish. Lots of bird life and suggest early morning as the best time.

An easy walk with Tea Rooms awaiting at the end of your walk. No hills but excellent views and landscape.

Nice views of the lake. A good place to go bird watching. Didn't see any cassowaries :-/ Check out the cafe at the bottom of the car park for lunch, nice view and service.

This was part two of a full days walking and driving the various lakes in the Atherton region. The others included Lake Tinaroo and Lake Eacham. I arrived here in time for a light snack lunch at the Tea House situated on the lake shore, before walking it off around the lake. Never did see a Freshwater Eel!
