White Cliffs of Dover (Dover to Deal Coastal Walk)

United Kingdom

Menu

An idyllic hike that takes you across the white cliffs of Dover that Julius Caesar saw when he first sailed to England. Accessible via public transport from London and makes for a great day trip with proper beach vibes and proper castle vibes.

Getting there

To get to the start of this hike, take the train from London to Dover Priory station (also feel free to drive innit). From the station, walk towards the port and you should start seeing signs pointing towards the heritage trail. It is hard to miss the cliffs.

Route/Trail notes

You can begin the trail in the morning by checking out Dover Castle which is a very important castle in British history. After spending a few hours there, mosey down to the coast and begin trecking along the cliffs. Note that you will be walking directly on top of the cliffs so they aren't always visible. The first section of the walk is relatively ugly as all you can see is a massive port with lots of cars and boats headed to France. Once you clear this concrete path, the views really start to open up and the land turns to stunning green farmland + ocean (and the occasional glimpse of the white cliffs).

It should be noted that at points you cannot walk directly along the edge of the cliffs as is it private property and you will have to walk along the roads. Unfortuantely, this is poorly sign posted and it isn't always clear where you need to go. Just head in the general direction you think is correct and it will eventually link you back up with the coast.

As you approach Deal, you will descend from the cliffs and walk directly along the beach. This area is very peaceful and full of beauty. There are cycling and running paths here as well as a monument to Julius Caesar's landing site. If you are bothered there are two more castles you will pass on the way.

While waiting for your train back into either Dover or London, it is worth checking out the town of Deal itself as the vibes are immaculate and some really nice pubs and cafes.

Really good hike but was exhausted after combining it with a trip to Dover Castle.
