Craters of the Moon lies within the Taupo volcanic zone and its landscape can be traced back over 700 years.
Underground geothermal activity along the belt shows itself on the surface as fumaroles, geysers, mud pools and hot springs.

Getting there:

From the centre of Taupo it takes ten minutes by car. Head north on Tongariro Street which becomes Wairakei Drive once you cross the Waikato River bridge. Drive up the hill to the roundabout and turn left into Karapiti Road and travel 2km to the Craters of the Moon car park.

Route/Trail notes:

From the entrance follow the boardwalk in a clockwise direction the takes you past the main attractions all the way back to the start.

There is an option to take a loop up along the ridge on the far side.

Permits/Costs:

This is a commercial operation with a $10 entry fee (2025).

After the rush of Huka falls this was a relaxing stroll around the craters with plenty of interpretive signage.
