| Ascended via the South East Ridge and descended via the South. One of the most spectacular hikes I’ve done. The hike was a good mix of undulated track, ridges, saddles and steep rock scrambles. Although a relatively experienced/fit hiker I was almost scared off by the comments about needing ropes to summit, especially given it was an overcast spitting day. Turns out we had nothing to worry about though… the hike wasn’t too strenuous and there were definitely no ropes required. If you have had experience doing rock scrambling hikes before and have done Mt Maroon I think you’ll be fine. It’s nothing like Beerwah or Giraween Pyramid rock scramble steep! Took us about 7hrs up and down with plenty of breaks. |

| Start of hike is at end of Bonogin Rd (putting ‘Bally Mountain’ into your gps will take you to private property on the other side of the mountain). Most of the hike is a steep slog up an unmaintained fire track that has many bumps and crevices. The slog is well with it for the last 15mins of the hike though which features a rock scramble with epic Gold Coast hinterland and coast views. Took us approx. 1hr each way. 2hrs 20mins total with break at the top and one accidental wrong turn at the very start. the walk is also 6km return not 9.5km. |
