Getting there

Emu Creek Road, then Old Mill Rd.

Require 4WD due to a number of creek crossings

Route/Trail notes

There is a foot pad but you would want to be able to navigate from topo map in case you lose the track.

As a loop you could do The Prow, Funnel, Stern Mt Steamer, Steamer Saddle as overnight camp, Panorama Point for the view, then back to Davies ridge for the down.

You could travel either direction as such.

Permits/Costs

Fuel to get there

What a great walk, I managed to get to the Old Mill Road car park in a Forester, there was not too much water in the creeks and the track was not too muddy. I got a bit lost at the start so won't upload my GPS track, next time I do the walk I will upload a plot. Although it does seem that people are walking this walk from different start points so I may start a new walk from Old Mill.

Require high clearance 4x4 to access trailhead from Old Mill Rd. Steep ascent on unstable scree hill up to ridgeline. Followed ridge beneath the mast and prow. The area where you scramble up to the steamers ridge is unstable from recent landslip activity. Camped the night with permits and watched sunset and sunrise. Great hike, no water on trail.

What a way to kick-start hiking again after a long hiatus! This one is a big day out if you're not staying the night. We camped near the entrance by the base of the prow. GPS said that's where the site was but there wasn't much so signify a campsite. Much better if you can make it to the top of the Stern and camp there. Headed up to the Funnel and followed the ridgeline past the Mast towards the Stern. Keep left and follow the path to double back to the lookout. Be warned there is some rock climbing and not for the faint hearted if heights aren't your thing.

Left from Teviot Falls / Head Rd entrance, first summited Mt Superbus, then followed the ridge line past Mt Roberts and onto Lizard Point. Set up camp at lizard Point, then continued pack free onto Mt Steamer then the Stern lookout. Different route then usual and a lot of walking, but definitely worth the effort. Track is reasonably good condition (April 2021)

A huge challenge, but very rewarding. We parked on Old Mill Road, and made our way to the base of the prow, where were were able to follow the foot pad out to the stern. A few misadventures saw us take 4 hours from carpark to lookout, but with these lessons learned, I think we'd do it in 3 hours (one way) next time.

Downloaded a GPS track from Wikiloc starting at the Emu Creek campsite, would not recommend that start point. You can intercept the main track but it involves 45 minutes of walking along a creek then bush bashing your way up the side of the cliff. At the top of the ridge there is a clear path up past the steamers. Eventually you will reach an intersection, one route continues on to the summit of Mt Steamer, the other backtracks along the top of the rock formation to Lizard point where you can get that famous photo of the Steamers.

The view was incredible! Involved a little bit of scrambling but wasn't exposed. After that we carried on to Mt Steamer which was only 40mins away or so along a reasonable track. The view from the top isn't as good as the Lizard Point lookout but it is still very nice, better than Wilson's peak. Has a perfect view of Mt Superbus, was great seeing the side profile of Superbus and understanding why it took so long to walk from one side of the 'summit' to the other.

All in all was a day well spent, took longer than expected but I think that was mainly cause we had to do a return trip down the side of steep hill covered in vegetation to get to and from the car.

Awesome combination of rock hopping, off trail hiking and some places to scramble with the most amazing view at the end.
