Melaleuca Circuit

Burrum Coast National Park

A nice walk, just 45 minutes drive from Bundaberg. Walk through the trees to come out to a beautiful mangrove and continue on to an 4WD/walk in only camp-site. A short sandy section along the beach, leads you back to the start of the circuit. Official signage says 12km return, but my GPS only measured around 11km.

Leave Bundaberg and follow signs for Woodgate. Follow Walker's Point road to the end of of the esplanade, where you will find a turnaround with picnic tables and parking. The trailhead is here.

Route/Trail notes

Around 500m of bitumen leads into a kilometer or so of hard packed stone/dirt. You then come out on a mangrove, with plenty of wildlife. From here you can go to the campsite, or follow the signs for the circuit (this is where the return actually starts). The campsite is around halfway through the circuit and has toilets available. Then there is a short walk alongside the beach until you return through the bushland back to the start.

Easy, nice and flat walk. Take bug spray as there were loads of mosquitos. The beach is absolutely stunning, definitely worth stopping for a picnic.
Otherwise it was not very exciting. Nice but not spectacular

Nice walk with varied landscapes. Take plenty of water on a hot day as not alot of shade. Would do it again.

A great walk, even under a drizzle and easy on the knees. Go through some varied landscapes from mangroves to a beautiful beach mid way (with toilets).

An enoyable, easy walk. The trail is well marked taking you through varied coastal and mangrove environments. The large areas of reddish, violet samphire are a joy for the eye. Half way on the circuit, just past the camp site, there is a beautiful spot on the beach to have lunch looking out to Harvey Bay.

We are only new to bushwalking as a hobby so had only intended on doing the easy little Bird Hide track, but after reaching the hide we decided to continue on the circuit. We will do it again but didn't expect it to venture so far into the scrub and then the track back is a good 2km of softish sand. But all in all was nice to hear the waves and birds and we were lucky enough to come across a young roo too.

Did this walk as soon as local covid restirctions were lifted and we could travel a little farther.

Due to a lack of people doing this walk we encountered a multitude of spiderwebs across the track (amazing how nature recovers when humans aren't around???)

Very easy to do with any level of fitness. Just take a regular day pack kit. Would recommend gaiters as track is sandy and sand in the shoes is never pleasant.

Fresh out of COVID restrictions and lockdown, the track was full of spiderwebs leading to a number of impromptu “spidee-dances” (the act of removing spider web from one’s head 😳😆) so pace was really slow. But being outdoors again was so good.

Great circuit in Burrum Coast National Park. A very flat and easy to traverse track. You could bring swimmers and stop for a swim just after reaching the campground. Would be spectacular in winter.
