The Winder track starts at the north-east end of Lookout Road, 6.3 km beyond Kurrajong picnic area. This track passes through rainforest along the crest of the Mistake Range before ending at the 'winder', a piece of relic machinery from the early days of timber cutting.

Getting there

The walk starts from the Goomburra Section of Main Range National Park along Lookout Road. The road is gravel but is drivable for conventional vehicles. A sign mentions conditions can be dangerous in wet weather.

Comments

An easy but longer walk than the others in the immediate area. The winder was a but underwhelming but an interesting piece of history. I didn't see any pigs but lots of digging and two large cage traps were setup. No real views from the ridge due to trees as others have said.

Oh my gosh mjorn_!!! That would have been terrifying. My husband and I did this walk too - we have never encountered so many snakes on a walk. The area was quite overgrown and didn't appear to be too well used. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with young children. And yes lots of wild pigs diggings - happy we didn't encounter any of them!

We completed this walk in about 3.5 hrs, a lot of uphill on the way there. It happened to start storming as we got to the Winder but there was so much wildlife about! Lyrebirds, goannas, pademelons and a Hastings River Mouse! Don't let the map fool you, despite walking along a ridge line the vegetation is dense and there are no views except for the first 30 metres of the walk.

Really beautiful walk through a variety of forest types, plenty of massive hoop pines adorn the track. Not much to see in terms of views though, unlike the other tracks in the park. There are a lot of pig diggings along the track, which led to a rather terrifying encounter with a family of wild pigs about a kilometre from the winder. After seeing us walk up over a crest on the track, a mother pig charged at us. We ran quite far in the opposite direction until her and her piglets were out of sight. Probably won't return after that experience, there are too many diggings and it doesn't seem like the pig population here is controlled very well.
