Getting there:

Route/Trail notes:

The Booyong Walk is clearly sign posted opposite the entrance to O’Reilly’s Reception. You start off walking along a slightly raised broadwalk till you come to a T-intersection. Go right to go onto the hanging bridges and for the opportunity to climb up the tree (lader) all the way to the top of the canopy. From there continue along the hanging bridges as this is supposed to be a one way path. From here you should be able to meet up with anyone that didn't want to go on the bridges. From here just head back the same way back towards the retreat.

Alternate Options after Hanging Bridges

Exploring the Mountain Gardens (Botanical Gardens): Through the gates, you can quickly become lost in all the paths that intertwine between each other. Native flowers and occasionally some birds, it's a nice peacful wonder away from the busy (weekend) bird feeding area. These gardens are looked after by a few locals and donations are always welcome.

Return via Boarder track: If you headed towards the Mountain Gardens, you would have noticed a path to the left heading towards the Border Track. Take this and follow to the T junction, where you can then turn left to head back to O'reilly's.

Permits/Costs:

None.

Other References/Comments:

The best time to see the abundant birdlife is to take this walk early morning or late afternoon.

Camping options within O'reilly's Campground (fees apply).

Comments

make sure you climb the tree top to look at the view - albeit slightly hidden by tree branches.

Not great if you're afraid of heights.

At 7.30 in the morning you will have the boardwalk and the tree top walk nearly for yourself, even on a public holiday.

Very pretty. Lot of birds. Physically very easy, psychologically not so much, when you're scared of heights like I am.

A great alternative walk back to the trailhead entrance from our Box Forest adventure. The swingy, suspended walkways can be a bit scary for those with a fear of heights. Didn't go up the ladder and the platform as there was quite a bit of a line. I imagine it would be fantastic for sunset views!

Did this one just after arriving at O'Reilly's for a few days. Lots of birds in the undergrowth. Whilst you always hear the whipbirds first time we got to see them.

I've been exploring up O'Reillys many times before and wanted to take some friends for an introductory Nature adventure. We stopped to watch the sun rise on our drive up. The tree walk was 1st on the list, a bit challenging for a couple to climb up, but they did and they loved it. Then it was necessary to go check out Python rock and Moran falls.

Nice short little walk, really enjoyable for younger children.
Didn't see so many birds, as it was quite busy when we went, but heard a Green Cat Bird and a few other birds.
The kids enjoyed wandering through the Mountain Garden, worth exploring while you're there. Saw some butterflies and lots of lovely flowers.

Good walk with the kids. Climbing the ladders up the tree is fun.

Juiced Pixels on 18 Nov, 2018

The kids were brave enough to go to the birds nest viewing platform.

Great walk to take kids on. Climb the ladders if you can.

For a short and easy walk this is actually a lot fo fun, be sure to go up to the treetop lookout.

Peter Hill on 19 Mar, 2018

Nice short walk with a ladder going up to two tiers in a tree. Watch out for people bouncing on the suspension sections.

A nice short walk. Great for birding. Bridge gets a bit slippery in the rain.

Great easy walk through the rainforest. the boardwalk is spectacular. Climbing the tree is amazing, though I was with Mum (early 50s) and she struggled with the tree climb part. Loved the rest though. Go and do it!

An easy walk from O'Reillys. Climbing to the top of the tree is a must.

Very short but fun for kids and the ladder to the lookout is good although when busy can be a bit of a wait.

It might have been 11 years from doing this walk and posting it, but my recollection of the prolific birdlife is still fresh as ever.
