From the information centre, this interesting track winds up through open forest and rainforest to emerge on the road opposite the ship's Stern track entrance. It provides excellent views into the Coomera Valley and passes a large red cedar and fine specimens of other rainforest tree species. A range of volcanic rock types and formations can be observed. Koalas are often seen in open forest area along the walk. Take care when walking down the bitumen road to return to the start of the circuit, especially on weeekends when traffic is heavy. A self guiding brochure for this circuit is available at the information centre, Lamington Teahouse and at Binna Burra Lodge.

Getting there

How do you get to the start of the walk?

Route/Trail notes

I personally haven't seen a koala there in 15 years. Start this walk from the Binna Burra Lodge entrance. It saves having to walk up such a steep climb on the way back. The walk up along the road is an easier climb. I have walked both ways and coming back to the Lodge via the road is 7mins quicker and easier on your body rather than coming from the infomation centre along the track.

Permits/Costs

Permits required for back country camping, Costs involved at staying at Binna Burra Lodge, and the Binna Burra campsite as well. (I would personally try the campsite and get the full experience)

The Information Centre has many good titles on the area.

Steve and I did this on a Sunday late afternoon near sunset. The sun can shine beautifully on the cave arch at this time. We didn't see anyone else. This is a lovely little easy track. No rainforest, but lovely gum trees and views over the Coomera Gorge. Magic!

Nice little walk. We did it anticlockwise, returning up the road, which wasn’t too hard and we got great views of Egg Rock and Heinz Dam along the way.

Combined with the Bellbird Track to form a circuit. Clockwise direction gives you an easier finish of the Caves Circuit.

realistically this track should be walked there and back. to walk it in a circuit you have to either walk up or down a narrow mainly 1 lane road which is rather steep (about 1.7km). I would not want to be walking up or down this road when there are a lot of cars driving past.

We parked in the upper carpark and walked down the road to the information center to start so we finished at our car.

Thin paths so I would suggest doing this track at less popular times to avoid needing to pass a lot of people.

being called the caves track I did also think there would be more caves

It took us 1 hour 50 and my watch tracked 6km.

Started at lower car park and walked down to information centre and started the walk there and avoided the road on the way back as the gets busy. Nice easy walk lots of views. Plenty of bird life.

Wow! Wow! Wow! What an adventure. Make sure you park at the info centre and start the walk there. It's a bit of a brutal 1.5km UP on the side of the road at the end... scenery was SPECTACULAR! I LOVED IT ALL! Even the hills!!

Naomi Bradley on 22 Aug, 2021

A lovely walk. We started at the top carpark then walked down the road to the lower carpark to start the walk. There were no signs saying that you can't walk down the road. It is an easy stroll through the forest to the caves. Exposed in places and a few stinging trees quite close to the track.

some scary edges
We started at the info centre and went anti-clockwise which im pleased we did beause the walk back on the road to the car at the end was all downhill. Saw some poor buggars going the other way who started at Binna Burra Lodge and they didnt seem to enjoy that final leg as much,

Lovely walk, park car in Binna Burra and walk downhill to the beginning of the walk 1km away , that way when you are done ,circuit complete, you finish where car is parked.
Very enjoyable walk with stunning views.

Aidan Rice on 29 May, 2021

Lots of steps, did it in a anti clockwise direction to limit incline. Parked up the top in car park (where you exit) and walked down to the visitor centre to start.

Lovely cool walk after several days of rain. Some water dripping over the cave overhangs and coursing down parts of the path. We saw a 30cm land mullet, a red bellied black snake and not very many people at all. I was a bit nervous walking down the road but otherwise enjoyed the walk, especially the fine views.

Beautiful. The caves are amazing. Not really a circuit though. You walk back along the main road.

The Route/Trail notes up above are a little confusing.

Search for 'Binna Burra Lodge' on Google Maps. You can start the trail at the Information Centre about 1.5 km before the Lodge. The caves are all at this end of the track. They were impressive, and the rest of the walk was nice, but it was a bit generic for a walk called "the Caves Circuit". It has a fair amount of sun exposure, so take plenty of water in summer.

The road from the Lodge back to the Information Centre is all downhill, I'm not sure why the Route Notes say to finish at the centre and walk back up. In summer at 35 C, I wouldn't want to be walking up that hill after a bushwalk.

A nice walk from behind the Information Centre, through the bush and caves (rock tunnel and rock overhang) to the Binna Burra lower carpark (and then back again the same way as you cannot currently walk along the road). The fires have had a real impact on the bush and allow more light in, so the weeds are growing quickly. It was an enjoyable walk but we preferred the nearby Gwongoorool track

Shazlex on 25 Oct, 2020

This walk is amazing, the cave has a large bee hive in it (well out of harm's way) and the views as the track snakes around the head are stunning

Peter Hill on 16 Oct, 2020

Half of this walk is still closed from 2019 fires. Enter from just down the hill of the Tea house. All down hill to the caves which is 1 cave but much bigger than we imagined. Really spectacular and worth the trip. Gorgeous rainforest to enjoy through and a soft path underfoot from all they leaf litter. You currently return the same way you enter. Saw a number of black cockatoos and heard lots of birds. There is a definite line of fire affected bush and then suddenly, no affect at all, quite incredible to see it. Will post a pic but it won't do it justice.
