Catch a bus to Rainbow Beach. Walk to the beach turn right (South) and start walking towards Double island Point

Route/Trail notes

From the Rainbow Beach Surf Life Saving Club walk down to the Beach turn south and start walking towards Double Island point. Make sure that you keep an eye and ear out for 4wd drivers. Sometimes I had to walk in the surf water to avoid some of the less cautious drivers.

After about an hour and a half you walk past the cliffs of coloured sand that extend for a few kilometres. Keep following the beach for another 4 or 5 kilometres to the rocks at the bottom of double Island point this should of taken about 4 hrs from the start. Find a concrete footpath at the base and walk up and over double Island point this is about 2 km but takes a while because of the views  and it is a great place for lunch. follow the pathway to the southern side of Double island and keep following the beach for about 6 km to the signs for Freshwater Campground. Be wary again of mad 4wd drivers! This is where I camped the night and the Lake had some water.

Next Morning, Find the start of the Freshwater Lake to Bymien Picnic Ground walk. Just follow the signs. It is an uphill walk but very pretty and no mad 4wd drivers! Make sure you go visit Poona Lake about a 2km detour. Just before you reach Bymien Picnic ground after walking about 8 km, a sign takes you to the Telegraph Track it is an uphill walk through Palm trees and make sure you follow the markers for about 2km until you reach a junction at the crest of the dunes where you turn left and follow the telegraph track for about 8 km up hill and downhill all the way back to Rainbow Beach. You will pass a couple of lookouts to sea and pass the western side of the Carlo Sandblow, where it encroachs on the pathway! Simply follow the streets back to Rainbow Beach township and the afternoon bus back to Brisbane or wherever.

Permits/Costs

$5 to camp at Freshwater Campground. Make sure you pre book your campsite!
