Lark Quarry Conservation Park

Central Queensland

Most people come here for the Dinosaur Stampede exhibit, a unique preservation of footprints and multimedia presentation of how they may have come to be. Around the site are a couple of walks - the Spinifex circuit (500m, 30mins) and Jump-Up Loop (90mins, 3.5km) - that showcase the arid landscape around this area and are well-signposted with information cards to entertain the young and old and worthwhile either before or after viewing the Stampede. Do take a hat and water. The sun is cruel even in winter.

Getting there

How do you get to the start of the walk?

The drive from Winton is 110kms, which has a majority over a wide dirt road with good shoulder allowances and permitting 80-100km/hr in dry weather, quite scenic in its own right. Allow 2 hours for the trip, although it can be done in less (see https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/parks/lark-quarry/about.html).

Comments

The Jump Up Loop is a fantastic walk to appreciate the outback landscape of the Winton area. Some spectacular scenery can be viewed along the way. It is a walk that needs proper shoes as the pathway down from the ridge is quite steep and the track is dry and gravelly, making it easy to slip. Definitely, take water and a hat is essential. It will take approximately 1.5 hours.
