Mount Baga

Central Queensland

Mt Baga (formerly Mt Jim Crow) is a volcanic plug of trachyte, sitting alone on a flat plain at over 200m high. There are a few different tracks up which include steep walks. One section is a loose rock scramble for about 60m. Beautiful views. Easy bushwalk to the base of the mountain. A quick but hard climb up to the top.

Getting there:

Heading from Rockhampton to Yeppoon, on the left about half way you will see the mountain standing out. There is a carpark on the left.

Route/Trail Notes:

Different tracks up the mountain. We never found the same one twice. Easy walk from the car park to the base. Once at the base we headed up to the right along the rockwall.

Lots of scrambling, really awesome quick trek with great views of the paddocks and other mountains around the area.

A short but steep hike up rocks. I’d take a backpack next time to put my water bottle and phone in as parts required having both hands free to climb. Saw a snake on the way up. Definitely a worthwhile walk as the views at the top were stunning.

A steep climb with a lot of very loose rock under foot and rock scrambling required. Not recommended in wet weather. Wouldn't recommend for young children. Great views.

Great views from the top but a bit of loose shale so watch your footing especially on the way down.

Short but steep hike! No official walk, but someone kindly spray painted the way! Well one of the ways, there seem to be many routes. We went up and down in an hour without too much difficulty. It was a hot day which was ok going up it was quite shaded, but not much shade at the top.

The first mountain I climbed in Australia. Took me about 30 min to the summit and I loved it. Not too exhausting and definitely worth the view. Pretty steep at points and be careful with loose rocks/gravel!

The first mountain I ever climbed in Australian on a visit in 2001.

The only details I can remember was that it was difficult then to keep on a track. The only clue I had was that the start was at the back of the old mine area. I got about half way up and the track just disappeared and as I was on my own and nobody else around, I came back down for safety reasons.

No digital photos back then so have had to scan mine in and the quality is not that great.
