Boowinda Gorge

Carnarvon National Park

Boowinda Gorge—18.4km return (5–6 hours) Class 4
Rock-hop into this sculpted side-gorge, 100m upstream of Cathedral Cave. The first kilometre of this boulder-strewn gorge is the most spectacular.

We had camped at Big Bend and did Boowimba Gorge and Battleship Spur the following day, returning to camp at Big Bend. The trail in the gorge is over loose river stones, so not a smooth path but ok. The climb up the gully to the Battleship Spur track was steep but ok as there were lots of tree roots to hold. To get to Battleship Spur you cross open grasslands then ascend and ascend and just when you think you’re there there’s another ridge to go up. Some sections are quite narrow and along the edge of the ridge and one part has a ladder to get to the top. The effort is rewarded with spectacular views.

Absolutely amazing! One of my favorite spots at Canarvon Gorge.
If you go far enough into the gorge you will come across a rock scramble on the right hand side which is the start of the Great Walk & also the way to Battleship Spur.
If you start from the visitor centre it's over a 20km return hike with about 14 creek crossings. Spectacular scenery & worth every step!

After making it to the Big Bend, we've started to explore the Boowinda gorge. This goes for a long way and it keeps amazes you after every bend further through the gorge. Very rocky and you definitely need good ankle supported shoe wear. So worth it and would love to go back to explore this gorge even further and further.

Done as a side trip off a walk to Big Bend and to have a quick look at the first part of the second section of the Great Walk.

Amazing gorge that just keeps twisting one turn after another.

Only a short offshoot from the main track to Big Bend & worth the time.
