Carlo Sand Blow to Poona Lake

Great Sandy National Park

This walk is part of the Cooloola Great Walk. Starting from the Carlo Sand Blow car park at Rainbow Beach, its a short 10 min walk to the Carlo Sand Blow. From there cross the sand blow to the other side and continue along the track. It is well sign posted. At the 5km mark the track parts into 2. Follow the path to Poona lake which is another 5km. This track is a much smaller track, but is well defined. Take a swim and have lunch at the lake and then return via the same way.

Getting there

I completed this walk in reverse - starting at Bymien picnic area walking to Poona Lake then onto rainbow Beach. All up, the one way wall was just on 12km. Poona lake was full to the brim so I couldn’t even walk out to get a 360^ view! It was really beautiful to see it so full! The water was up to the walking track. The walk to Carlo Sandblow was really lovely - some really amazing fig trees, scribbly gums and hoop pines along the way. Incredible to see all of this thriving in sand! Lots and lots of birdlife too and I was lucky enough to see a lace monitor and a blue tongue lizard! Some up and down sections that got my heart rate up but towards the end, you start to see glimpses of the ocean and can hear the waves which was lovely. Carlo Sandblow is incredible - walking across this with full hiking gear was tough but the views were worth it! One day I’ll do the full great walk as it really is a beautiful area.

Walked as a part of the Great Walk. Not the most interesting of the tracks, but a good walk if you have time while staying in Rainbow Beach. Some up and down, but nothing major.

Plenty of hills, lots to look at. Recommended

The track is well marked and easy to follow. Mostly sheltered by trees. The trail is topographic but anyone with moderate fitness should find this a pleasant walk. Lake Poona offers tranquil views and is a great place to enjoy lunch before the walk back to the Carlo Sand blow. Alternative route for those not wishing to cross the sand blow is to start at the rangers information centre and walk the trail up behind the blow.
