Mount Kiangarow

Bunya Mountains

This track leads to the highest point of the Bunya Mountains: Mt Kiangarow (1,135m). The track climbs 132m over 1.4km, gradually winding around the mountain and leading through an avenue of grasstrees at the crest lookout. An excellent spot to view the sunset.

Officially rated Grade 3/Medium (uneven track surface + steady, gentle incline), this is relatively gentle walk that would be suitable for most ages/fitness levels.

Getting there:

Bunya Mountain Road is the thoroughfare to Bunya Mountains. It can be reached from Kingaroy south on the Bunya Highway for 32km and turning left (signposted). From Dalby north, you need your GPS to get to the base of the drive. This is a very steep and twisty mountain road, which is shared by hikers and lots of wildlife, so please take care.

Start at the Burtons Well camping and day use area at the northern end of the park.

Route/Trail notes:

From the picnic area, cross the road to the signposted start of the trail. Follow the track as it slopes gently up and around the mountain to the summit lookout, passing through shady, fern-carpeted vine forest, native raspberry thickets, a corridor of grass trees and sparser vegetation towards the summit. There is only one interesction, which is clearly signed. The path is well-defined and easy to follow, though some sections have rocks and tree-roots that could cause a trip-hazard - remember to bring a torch if returning to camp after sunset.

Return by the same route.

Permits/Costs:

None.

Easy, enjoyable walk with kids. Excellent view from the lookout. Would like to do it again at sunset. Sand wasps currently digging burrows right in front of the picnic seat - not aggressive but will sting if their nest is disturbed.

Easy walk to see the beautiful view

Lovely easy short walk completed in about 40 mins with time to enjoy the view at the top.

Last walk of the day having covered over 20km on five walks today starting at 8am. No wonder I am feeling tired and looking forward to a well deserved drink and a hot meal. Interesting to hear the dingos howling somewhere on the mountains in the late afternoon.

Looking dry but nice views on the walk and at the lookout. Saw eagles cruising the thermals. Watch out for ticks - we found a couple on us when we returned to the campsite.

We parked the car at Burtons Well and started with Mt Kiangarow first (this only adds 2.2km) on our Cherry Plain circuit. Mt Kiangarow was terrific and we were able to see birds and wallabies on the track. Some really great views while walking up and when we got to the top. We then walked to Cherry Plain via Ghinghion Lookout, Bottle Tree Bluff and Cherry Plain Lookout. All up, an 11km walk in 3 & a bit hours.

Beautiful view from the top.

It was freezing the day we went to the Bunya Mountains, but so beautiful. If it's a cold day, be sure to rug up because it's even colder up there. A very easy walk in and out.

Great view from the summit

Nice short 2.2km walk. A steady slope upwards which meant the way back was all downhill. Not too hard an upward slope though. Lookout was great over the tops of the grass trees to a great vast area, well worth the walk.

Easy walk with a fantastic view from the lookout. Loved the grass trees across the top.

Not too steep and it actually flattens out for the last bit at the top. Stunning views!

Caught a beautiful sunset here and walked back down with a good head torch, checking out the wildlife. Very nice, especially when the wind is gentle.

A mystical magic short walk. Beautiful!

We enjoyed the walk, but beware of ticks. None actually attached, but three climbed up on us while at the lookout.
