North Kobble Bush Camp (GPX)

Remote bush camping in open eucalypt forest adjacent to Kobble Creek. The campsite has no facilities other than a fire pit and some log seating. The campsite's access from Lepidozamia Road is by walking along a wide 4wd track. Navigation is relatively easy but you will need to be physically fit for the return journey as the terrain is steep in sections. The walk in from Lepidozamia Road will take approximately 3 hours, and the walk out approximately 4 hours. Distance is is approximately 10km each way. An emergency plan should be in place with a responsible friend or family member. A topographic map is required to find the campsite — map grid reference: 778 856.

Getting there

From Mount Glorious Road, this campsite is accessed from the Lepidozamia track. The Lepidozamia track entrance is an hour drive from Walkabout Creek in The Gap.

Route/Trail notes

From the Lepidozamia track follow the North 4wd trackto peak 638 track junction turning onto the right forkfollow this down the steep 4wd track until the next junction. A sharp right turn will lead to Middle Kobble Creek Camp. Turn left and ignore the immediate right turn to the lookout at peak 489. Great to go to on way up! Now follow this track for next 3 km or so some parts are a steep descent which means a steep ascent! The camp ground is found about 50m off the trackjust after a sharp bend in the road. A pleasant place to camp and I found plenty of water in the creek. Unfortunately it is a steep uphill slog on the way out as you retrace your steps.

After last week's rain the creeks are running and is beautiful. 16 creek crossings, expect to get wet feet.

A pleasant little seating area at the campsite. The campsite itself is signed, so easy to find. The path is a fire trail the entire way along and though that's not the kind of thing I usually go for there's certainly enough nature along the way to keep things interesting.

Easy enough to do this with Middle Kobble on the way back, or even South Cobble if you're a faster walker and start early.

Bush looking very dry and just a few puddles in the creek. Good bird and insect life though and scenic with native grasses along creek. Would be great after decent rains. Camp site very dusty and uninspiring but good seating area and logs, looking at other photos seems a different place when there's grass ^_^

Hiked in from Lepidozamia Road for an overnighter at the bush camp. The track is a wide 4wd track all the way to the campsite. Navigation is easy although track junctions can be hidden as the pathway was very overgrown in sections due to recent rain. Elevation drops from about 700m at the start of the track to 150m at the creek so it is a tough uphill climb with a backpack on the return journey. There are numerous easy creek crossings along the way after you drop down the side of the hill to the creek. The campsite is situated close to the creek and has plenty of grassy areas to pitch the tent. Water was plentiful when we went but I would not rely on water being in the creek during dry spells. All in all a nice overnight hike.

We walked in via the Lepidozamia track from Mt Glorious Rd. Lots of shade on the track during the afternoon walk in, which took just under 3 hours with minor breaks. The track is graded all the way to the campsite - once all the steep downhills end and you hit the creek, continue crisscrossing the creek several times over a couple km and the campsite is on your right. An enjoyable overnight walk but a hard slog on the 4hr walk out (all the lovely downhill on the way in, must inevitably be an uphill on the way out!). Bit of water in the creek along the way which was nice, but creek crossings were super easy. Nothing flowing and just a little pond of water near the camp. Keep an eye out for the glow bugs at night!
