Getting there

Set your GPS to the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve Entry. Once there you will see a medium size carpark with a small booth. You will need to pay the entry fee to the Ranger manning the booth.

Route/Trail notes

There are a number of walks you can do in the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve but the Perdekop loop is probably the longest. Starting on the Uitkyk trail you will slowly ascend up the valley beside Perdekop. Eventually you will see a track on your right with a sign for Perkedop - this is where the ascent becomes a bit steeper (and when the views start getting alot better). You will pass massive sheer cliffs and see enormous peaks in every direction. Despite being the highest mountain in the reserve the walk up is relatively gradual. Nearing the summit you will pass a trail on your right that leads back to the Reserve Entry - you will return to the trail after the summit to complete the loop. The summit has a cairns and a great 360 degree view! The walk back is a lot more direct, and a lot more steep. The further down you go the steeper the track becomes. A staircase leading to a small bridge marks the end of the descent - and the start of a small ascent back to the carpark where you started the walk.

Permits/Costs

R50 per person - roughly $5AUD.

Comments

This was totally worth the drive! The scenery along the way is absolutely spectacular, if there was any region of South Africa I would go back to visit again this would be it! The walk up was very gradual with lots of fantastic views along the way. Was unfortunately a bit overcast the day we did it but we still thoroughly enjoyed it. The ranger at the start of the walk said whilst Leopards are in the area they are very shy and rarely seen during the day. The walk reminded me a bit of the Kozy/Townsend Loop - although the views here are quite a bit better. Doing the loop in the opposite direction would be an awesome challenge, one that my sister was not up for so we stuck to the more popular clockwise circuit.
