Grand Canyon Rim Walk

United States of America

The highlight of course is the Grand Canyon, nothing you have ever seen can prepare you for how big it really is, the path is mostly paved with some gravel sections, and views up to 40miles to the other side of the canyon. There is a bus for the return journey and planning to be on the rim at sunset is a must.

Getting there

How do you get to the start of the walk?

Fly to America and bus or drive to Arizona there are several tour companies but we found it easier and cheaper to hire and drive there ourselves.

Maps

Which maps cover the area? America

Route/Trail notes

Very easy walking with paved and gravel paths along the south rim of the Grand Canyon, the views are spectacular and, because there are very few sections with any sort of barrier, you can literally stand on the edge of the rim, but it can be extremely windy. Do be aware of Elk in Rut season (early Fall), they can be very nasty as I found out. And, surprisingly, the most dangerous animal in the park, with more attacks per year than elk and mountain lion combined, is the ground squirrell. Heed all signs not to feed them - they bite!!

Permits/Costs

What's the cost? 25US to enter the park but if your staying overnight then camping  fees will also apply

Comments

-12 degrees in the morning and warmed to o degrees. We had planned to hike into the canyon but did the rim walk instead after finding too much ice and snow without crampons.
