Millions of years in the making, it’s definitely worth packing your camera to capture the beauty of the park from a bird’s eye view. Walk to the summit of Mount Kaputar at sunrise or sunset, and watch the colours flood across the landscape and the stunning 360° views of the dramatic cliff and rock formations from the lookout.
Getting there:
From Narrabri, take Old Gunnedah Road south and after about 2.5km, turn left onto Kaputar Road. Follow Kaputar Road for 27km to the entrance of Mount Kaputar National Park. The road from the park entrance is a steep, single lane road and caravans are not permitted.
You’ll find the Dawsons Spring Campground day use area car park about 20km along on the right, which is where the walk begins.

The Mount Kaputar Summit walk winds its way up through towering eucalypts; crosses the roadway and continues up to emerge at a lookout with stunning 360° views of the dramatic mountain ranges.
Return by the same route.

With so many bushwalking options here and a length drive in, why not take advantage of the excellent camping facilities at Bark Hut or Dawsons Spring.
