Mt Boogarem Lookout

Mt Jerusalem National Park

Mt Boogarem is located on the Koonyum Range and forms part of the Mt Jesusalem National Park. You can in fact drive to the lookout, but that would take the fun out of bushwalking! The walk is from the entrance to the National Park along graded tracks, with an option to follow a horse riding track or visit a further lookout called Teales.

Getting there:

Leaving Mullumbimby south on the Coolamon Scenic Drive, you turn right into Wilson Creek Road, just beyond the golf course. Follow this road for 5km and then take a right turn into Koonyum Range Road. The gates of the park are 2km along this road, where you can park to the side of the track.

Maps:

Non found.

Route/Trail notes:

The entrance to the park is at 300m and the walk undulates between this and 500m. It follows the rim of the escarpment in a horseshoe shape. 1.1km in there is a track to the left to Teales Lookout. Return to the main track and after 2km you turn right into Boogarem Road and follow this for 1.2km, where you will see a further turning to the right marked 'lookout track'. This is what is known as the 'Loop Trail' and after 0.7km there is a 100m track to your right to the lookout itself.

Backtrack to the 'Loop Trail' and follow it right. This will bring you back to Boogarem Road, where you turn left and head back the way you came onto Koonyum Range Road. After 1.6km you will see a horse trail to your left called Rayners Track. Take this track which drops down and then back up to Koonyum Range Road just 0.5km north of the park entrance.

After the gate on Kooyum Range Rd, the trail enters Mt Jerusalem National Park, and dogs are not permitted on park land.

A number of the tracks have 'private access road', as there are a few house up here perched on the edge of the escarpment, but you are still allowed to use them.

Permits/Costs:

None.

Other References/Comments:

This area also gives you access to Mt Boogarem itself, but maybe now on private land.

Comments

We had trouble finding the trail originally but eventually made it to the lookout however there not a lot to see and the trail itself was pretty standard. Not one I’m eager to repeat.

Great walk with spectacular views

BeckNWood on Oct, 2016

I found this track purely by accident, whilst researching access to the summit of Mt Boogarem.
This is a pleasant easy walk along the graded track through the gum trees. The track follows the rim of the escarpment with a lookout on either side. Teales Lookout provides great easterly views along the coastline, whilst Mt Boogarem Lookout on the far side looks west to where you started and the farmlands in the valley below.
The lookout is a great spot for a picnic, but be wary if you have children with you, as there is no indication where the edge of the cliff is and there is a 200m vertical drop.
