Mt Tauhara

North Island NZ

A moderate hike to the summit that offers excellent views of Lake Taupo, Mt Ruapehu and Mt Tongariro. The track is very well marked however it branches off quite frequently, don't panic all tracks lead to the summit so you won't get lost. The summit has great views but the best views are a bit further down the ridge line on a rocky outcrop.

Getting there

Drive to a carpark at 94 Mountain Road, Maunganamu 3379.

Route/Trail notes

From the carpark you have to cross onto someones property via a small set of steps next to the fence (very nice of them to offer this). From there it's a moderately steep walk through open fields to the rainforest section. The path is very well marked by huge trenches in the ground. There is a creek about 15mins from the top and towards the summit the track splits with left taking you to the summit, right taking you to the rocky outcrop look out (they both link up at the top as well so don't stress about which one to take).

Comments

Nice gradual climb, which also appears to be very popular with the locals (saw quite a few jogging up and down). On a clear day you can see the huge snow capped mountains off in the distance not to mention the sun reflecting off the massive Lake Taupo. Great bang for buck mountain, good place to see wildlife too, we saw a hedgehog on the way down.
