Mount Manaia

North Island NZ

A steady walk with a lot of stairs to the lookout near the top of Mount Manaia. Very distinctive mountain with massive rock pillars on top of it. There is a rough track leading to the furthest pillar which you can climb up.

Getting there

Navigate to 2129 Whangarei Heads Rd, 0174 to find a carpark at the base of the mountain.

Route/Trail notes

Leaving the carpark there is an information board giving the history of the area and the mountain. You pass through a shoe cleaning station and make your way up the mountain. Is a steady well used track that has ALOT of stairs. Once you reach the summit there is a small wooden platform you can walk up to get a nice view over the harbour. Those who dare can walk further and climb up the huge rock pillar at the far end of the mountain. Take care because there are some huge drop off - not for those with a fear of heights!

Comments

Great walk, lots and lots of stairs, no surprise we saw firefighters in full gear walking up and down it for practice. The view from the wooden platform is great but the view from the rock pillar is unreal. Definitely have to have a head for heights to go up there but it seems to be well travelled. There is a nice clearing at the top of it where you can sit and enjoy the view.
